2G 3000GT VR-4 fifth gear?

i read on cardomain.com that this guy swapped a 3000GT VR-4 fifth gear into his stock gsx gearbox to get better mileage and top speed, my buddy wants to try this on his gsx. is this a good idea? and if so how much do you think this could end up running me? and how much could it help the top speed on a 95 gsx? (stock except a ported 16g)

I don't know much about the dificulty or expence, but I can tell you that the final drive ratio on a 5spd 3000gt vr-4 is 3.869:1. Where as the final drive ratio on an awd dsm is 4.929:1 (from what I've read). Just changeing out the fifth gear would not change the final drive ratio to 3.869:1 due to all of the other gearing you would not be changeing, but if you can swop the final gear in, it should increse your top speed by a good bit.
Warning, the vr-4 5th gear would act like an overdrive gear in this tight little tranny, and shifting into fifth would almost definately drop you out of your powerband. (accelleration would slow to near nothing when you hit 5th.)

He probably mean he swapped a GVR4 5th gear, from a Galant, not a 3KGT. See www.teamrip.com for details regarding using GVR4 tranny parts.

First off, the GVR4 has the exact same 5th and final drives as the DSMs but the 5th gear out of the 3S would be a nice mod and with a 16g making good power increase your top speed some, if your car pulls to revlimiter I don't know but my would have if I stuck in it for another 400rpm. TREs 25% taller 5th, I was told you would have to hall ass to 80mph 4th to do anything in 5th. but the 3s 5th would not be nearly as tall.
