Well, here we go. We just snagged a 99 GST Spyder pretty cheaply. We had an old 98 GST Spyder that was totaled from behind. We are in the process of swapping all the mods from the old car to the new one... and install some upgrades that were meant for the old car.

The car has 135,000 miles on it and still has the stock injectors and turbo. We're going to keep it that way for a few months (until we buy a house), Then we'll swap the motor our for a nice 2.4L longrod. I figured now would be a good time to learn to tune well... with the expendable engine.

Here's what we have installed:

GM 3" MAF - blowthrough
Apex'i VAFC-II (It's a SAFC2 with a VTEC controlloer)
Apex'i AVC-R boost controller
Dejontool IC pipes
HKS SSQV BOV
Greddy 24R FMIC
Pacesetter 4-2-1 tubular race headers
1G throttlebody (coolant lines cleared)
Magnus sheetmetal intake

Stock exhaust... waiting for a drivetrain transplant

We just finished the AVCR / VAFC install today. Where should I start tuning? I understand with the MAFT... but any suggestions? Once the MAFT is baseline tuned, what about the SAFC? AVCR? Any help or criticism welcomed.

I've searched and read through VFAQs, DSMtalk and this thread and can't seem to come to a concise conclusion.

Set the boost to a reasonably low level for your setup, and zero out the SAFC. Tune the MAFT using the fuel trims to set up all the base knobs.

Then, turn the boost up. Add or subtract fuel at WOT if necessary.

Then fine tune on the SAFC if you want to.

Just a question about this; using the MAFT, and the SAFC, you set the base setting with the MAFT and Finetune with the SAFC, or is the SAFC pretty much worthless in this case? I'm Looking at both of them, but nobody i know has firsthand knowledge with both of them on one car, its one or the other.

Thanks,
MIKE

If you have an older version of the MAFT (V 1.37 or below) then you may need a SAFC to fine tune it. If you have the new version (2.00+) then you can fine tune with the MAFT.

Sorry to get off topic, but I would suggest a new exhaust manifold. Everybody on this site will agree. They are extremely prone to blowing welds and cracking.
