2g mas or maft in a 1g

Depends on what you want from the car. The MAF-T is pretty hit-and-miss for most people. Some it runs great, others have huge problems. But if you HAVE to have the ricey atmo-vented BOV noise, it's the way to do it properly. The 2G MAS flows well, should NEVER be hacked (this goes for 2G guys as well), but you can't vent.

Be warned, with that MAF-T setup you'll still have more to buy; it won't fit your stock UICP (so you'll need a new set of pipes), and if you intend to vent your BOV, you'll need to buy an aftermarket one, given that the stock 1G 'bov' is actually a CBV... open under vacuum, and drawing in unfiltered air if it's open to atmo.
The 2G MAS you'll need an adapter plug, and something to do fuel control... an SAFC is the cheapass route, and still limited.

So it really depends on your budget. Personally, I'd stay with the stock 1G MAS until you know what you want, and why. If the money is burning a hole in your pocket, buy an SAFC and start upgrading your fuel system. The intake isn't your current power bottleneck.

A gm MAF is a hotwire maf this is a response to, "The GM sensor measures MASS of the air, not volume." :

"Of course. But the question is, how?

Volume flow is measured independent of temperature anyway. That's why CFM is often inaccurate when refering to hp potential.

All hotwire mafs must still have the air temp metered. See this good link: Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor.

The hot wire in the maf, in simple terms, actually directly measures humidity. It does not measure mass flow. And we all know that a humid cold day will have more ambient density than a dry cold day. But also, a humid cold day will have more ambient density than a humid hot day.

Some hotwire MAF sensors including the gm maf use an internal "cold" wire to meter ambient temp that is sent to the ecu for correcting the airflow signal (GM, Ford). Some hotwire maf sensors rely on an external sensor to do such (Nissan). What makes the gm maf unique is that the maf corrects the hertz signal using the internal temp sensor before shooting a signal to the PCM.

So, still, if the aircharge going through the gm maf is hotter than what the "cold" wire was designed to meter or if it fluctuates in a pattern too rapid for the "cold" wire to read (the sensor has an inadequate reaction time), then you're going to get an irratic MASS flow signal.

Also note that the Bosch hot-wire units (liek the gm maf) have a self-cleaning cycle where the platinum wire is heated to 1,000 degrees C (1,832 F) for one second after the engine is shut down. The momentary surge in current is controlled by the automobile's ECU through a relay to burn off contaminants that might otherwise foul the wire and interfere with the sensor’s ability to read incoming air mass accurately.

Our ecu has no provision for that. . . So what do you think happens to us maft guys often? This is likely another reason why the GM maf works well for some but not others. Who has their stock valve cover vent orientation? Who has a turbo w/ a slightly blown oil seal. Who has been injecting contaminated water and/or alky? etc."

Ok now i got a question about all this! i have a 2g maf wired in to my 1g Laser. he car runs good when the maf is unplugged but stalls when plugged in! I haven't wired the safc up yet! Is this why it stalls? And also wondering if someone has a complete install guide for the safc 2

Yes, you need the SAFC wired up for it to run properly. When you get it all wired and setup if you are still on the stock 450's you will need to richen it up about 20% across the board both the lo and the hi settings. But just look at your fuel trims and it will tell you where you are at. And the install on the SAFC-II is the same as the SAFC here. There are some wires you will NOT use they are for other cars with more than one MAS.
