im looking to get a new intake setup now for my 1g. now ive been hearing mixed remarks of what i should get.

how much better is the gm maf over the 2nd gen mas?

are there any ups or downs or trade offs between the two?? and if i purchased the gm one, would my s-afc be useless???

thanks alot

I started out with my 1G MAF and removed the lower honeycomb, but that was only good for my 14b. When I upgraded to the Big16G i was overrunning the 1G MAF, so I hot-wired a 2G MAF into my car. The 2G MAF cured the overrun problem, and tuning with the Apexi SAFCII was easy once I got used to it. When I got my car Dyno tuned a few weeks ago, I asked to have it tuned with the 2G MAF first, then tuned again with my new GM MAS/Translator to compare the two. Here is the Dyno Sheet

After installing the GM MAS/Translator and getting it set to idle smooth. Just a few adjustments on the SAFC and the car made 10HP more on a base run with the GM MAS.

My thoughts after three weeks:
1. The 3.5" GM MAS does allow more air flow. Spool up is faster and much louder!!
2. The Translator from Ramchargers allows for easy base settings for Fuel Cut, Injectors, Idle, MID throttle and WOT.
3. Tuning after the Translator with the SAFC in the car is the same as before.
4. I am using the GM MAS in a "Pull Thru setup" and recirculating my BOV.
5. "Rice factor" You can vent your BOV, if the GM MAS in installed between the BOV and Throttle body. (Blow thru setup)

if you have the money go with the gm maf and the maf translator. the closer you put the maf to the throttle body the better it will work. it will have a more accurate reading of what the motor needs.

Anyone have problem with the changin the weather from lockking the barometer, and intake temp to set value on MAFT? We get quite bit different weather here all depends on the humiduty and temp that I would be worry about not running right all the time.

i sure have i sold my set up and went to 2g because of this and dont regret it at all i went with what i knew would do the job right the gm mas doesnt include the intake temp and screws everything up

That's only true to a certain extent. Millions of GM cars run on GM mafs from the factory. None measure intake temperature and they run perfectly normal, regardless if it's winter or summer. Mitsu mafs measure intake temp to plug into a formula that results in a calculated air mass going into the cylinders. The gm maf skips the calculating part and instead has a directly measured air mass.

When intake temps change, so does air mass. When pressure changes, so does air mass. Weather and altitude shouldn't affect the way a properly tuned car runs on a gm maf because of this.

Budget plays a big role in which one to choose, setup-wise. With the gm maf, you'd need a translator, or v3 dsmlink with the gm maf cable to convert the gm maf signal to something the Mitsu ECU can recognize. With the translator, you can still fine tune with the s-afc. With dsmlink, you can ditch it.
