i know this sounds backwards, but i just got a deal on a complete 7 bolt with trans, clutch, and all the extra part for dirt cheap. it came with everything minus the wire harness and ecu......
now here the story on my car it a 93 gst that came with the 7 blot. it was swapped out for a 6 bolt. the transmission thats in there is toast and the engine has some kinda lifter or valve problems. i figure why not swap the 2g 7bolt engine in there with working clutch and trans. is this a bad idea nad more work involved or just a bolt up?
what should you recommend?

You won't be able to use the 2g trans. Also, I don't know how you'd get the 2g cas to work with 1g wiring.

i didn't do anything different with the car. drove it home fine. all was okay. got in it started it and it was a loud noise coming from the valve/lfter area. i know the lifters were tapping before, but not near this loud. maybe jumped timing? someone give me an idea. could those lifters just go out completely like that clattering?
i do have a mechanic coming take a look at it sunday with a timing light to see if time jumped.

where will you bolt the motor mounts on side of the block? There are no threaded holes for them like on a 1g 7bolt or a 6 bolt.

yeah i realize this won't be an easy swap, so as it breaks my heart to disassemble my dsm once again. i will not got the 2g 7bolt to 1g swap. i'd rather rebuild the head, fix the trans, and put the stock clutch flywheel back in before i go the 2g7bolt swap. plus i know my 1g6bolts very well and i can do this all in a good weekend if i have all the parts and no tests coming up.
thanks again, withot this forum i only have the opinions of local ford and chevy mechanics!

anybody ever had really loud lifters before? maybe from locking up or something. i'm in no rush just looking for ideas.

Could be a spun rod. Does it persist throughout all rpms? If it does, then one by one take off the sparkplug boots and see if the noise goes away. If it does on one, that is the trashed rod.

That's half true. It really all depends on what year the trans is out of. If it came out of a '95-'96 then he's golden and he CAN use the trans in the car. Where as if it's out of a '97-'99 the internal final drive ratio is different and cannot be used in a 1g.

And as Jeff said, the major problem will be where to mount up the engine. On the 2g they had three mounts on the transmission and one on the engine driver's side. On the 1g three are on the engine and one is on the transmission. Therefore, the bolt holes are not present on the 2g's block. Also, to use the trans you will just unbolt the two front and rear mounts and replace the top mount with the 1g mount.

I think the best thing to do would be to have a custom tubular cross member made to utilize the F&R 2g mounts on the trans. Which will hold the engine up with it.
