We are gonna pull the head on my friends 2G DSM this weekend and wanted to know what all we need to do. We are also pulling the pistons out (I worked on Honda's and worked at Ford for a while and was used to pulling the head and then unbolting the rods from the crank and pushing them out) Can that be done on DSM's as well? Im a newb to DSM's and so is he so I figured i would be the better of the two of us and learn what i can before hand. thanks!

Get a hayne's or chilton's manual first of all, so you have diagrams and torque specs.

The rods can be unbolted from the crank from under the engine when you remove the oil pan. Just unbolt the bearing caps, nothing unusual.

You'll have to remove all the sensors, the timing belt, the radiator & hoses, thermostat housing, exhaust manifold and turbo, the downpipe (to get the oil pan off easily), and the driver-side mount

Lots of info in this thread about what you are doing: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-engine-fuel/185236-head-removal-mini-engine-rebuild.html?highlight=mini+engine+rebuild

Thanks. We have the manual at his house, but after using REAL service manuals for a few years, Haynes gets to be really annoying haha

Just glad to know that the rods are easy to get our just like fords and hondas haha!

Just wondering. Why the radiator? Doesn't seem like you would need to.

I agree - I'd pull the motor too. It only takes a few hours longer to yank it out, and it'll make working on your engine light years easier. You can work a LOT easier on the oil pump while it's out too, which in turn will make the BSE kit a lot easier to install (you were going to eliminate your balance shafts, right?) :D
