one of my close friends recently bought a 95 automatic TSI. this wasn't his first DSM, in fact i met boost and the true power of the 4g63 for the first time riding in his mid 12 second manual TSI all wheel drive. this experience lead me to buy my dsm so i was naturally happy to learn he was buying another talon. this time however he purchased an auto hoping to reap the benefits of boost between shifts. accustomed to a dsm's needs that pacify a drivers wants, he upgraded to a big 16g, fmic, and old school 5 nob afc, solid ic piping, and a new air filter. this was the beginning of his project and the other mods he had lined up looked promising. one day he came over to the house complaining of a complete power loss. he told me when he left his driveway it ran awsome. by the time he got to my house he lost almost all power, and his boost gauge only read vac. my first thought was ic pipe blew off.wrong. OK i said we'll figure it out. we boost leak tested, compression tested, pulled the plugs, tested the coil, and whatever else we could think of that could have broken on a 7 mile trip under normal driving conditions. the turbo we knew was working because it was brand new, and we could hear it spooling. we had to quit that day but i thought about it all night at work........

-turbo is brand new and spools
-compression ok
-plugs ok
-coil ok
-no boost leak
-wires new and correct resistance
-numerous other tests that also checked out
-most of all, ran great at the beginning of 7 mile trip.

the 3 hours i previously tested were leaving me more lost than when i had first begun. i talked to my friend later that night after work. we felt like a couple dumbasses. "what the hell could have changed in 7 miles that could make your car run like crap, and be seemingly impossible to find?" i asked him.
"i don't know." he said. i put on my new air filter thismorning, got gas, and stopped by my girl's house, then came over. i can't.....

i zoned him out. it clicked. i went to his house the next morning and pulled the intake pipe off of his turbo and heard "TINK" . the compressor blades were totally gone! his intake pipe looked like one of those glitter coated strippers hanging off a pole, and his motor had swallowed enough metal to make it smoke like bin laden's grass hut after a shit storm. i picked a chunck of metal out of the driveway.

if you haven't figured it out yet this is what happened:
my buddy had bought one of those cone air filters off of ebay. that morning the ups man showed with it and my friend decided to do the extensive 2 minute install first thing. he popped off the stock system and quickly bolted up the new filter. quickly, cost him $2500 bucks. he must have somehow dropped one of the 10mm bolts that secure the filter in place down into the intake. it must have rode around in there until he got on the highway then dislodged when his turbo was spooling good and fast causing a nasty bit of damage.
he didn't hear it grind over the road noise and we never suspected a turbo problem because it was brand new, and to the ear spooling just fine. this was a good lesson in diagnosis for me, and a better lesson in basic mechanics for my friend.

true story, happened last week. anyone figure it out before the end? this ever happen to any of you guys? long i know, but thanks for reading and for your comments in advance.

i have recently moved away from him to go to school but last i herd he was buying another car. yep. i checked my intake afterwards even though it had never been touched. money does weird things huh?

what scares me is i didn't get a new filter but i got a new intake pipe replacing my rubber intake.. i did a 3 minute install.. no bolts just that fastener thing.. but I'm getting a new filter next week and its off ebay.. I'm going to quadruple check it to make sure its securely tightened and fastened.. thanks for that good yet scary reality check..

know that it was not a defective part or loose bolt that just fell in, but human error. avoid that and you shall succeed.

LOL! not really(especially with dsm's) but it sounded good.

How odd that the last thing was the first cause. Always nice to find out about driveyard mods after it's too late. :|

The important thing to remember is to pay attention to what you're doing and to not get into a rush. You'll be fine if you remember those two simple rules.

Oh, rule 3. Work with the light, not against it.
