I'm in the market for a new head unit and I am looking at getting an in dash screen. My only problem is, what will and will not work with my car (96 GST)? My local audio shop told me it would take ALOT of customizing to get a double din unit to work, but after searching several threads it looks like we can easily get a double din to work. I was looking at getting a Pioneer AVH-p3100DVD (5.8" Screen) because Punishment Racing has it advertised as fitting without a mounting kit, but if we can easily fit a standard double din unit in without much modification I would like to know if its possible to fit something with a bigger screen in easily such as my next and more favorable option of a Kenwood DDX514 or maybe even something with a 7"screen.

And I know the easier choice would be to get a motorized flip out screen, but I like the clean sleek look of a double din unit compared to a single. Thanks for any input!

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.........There is absolutely no custom anything involved. A double din will drop right in with the stock mounting hardware. A double din actually works better in our cars because it wont cover up the HVAC controls and vents like a flip out will.

OMG, people have been feeding you some wrong info.

The stock stereo on GST/GSX ARE DOUBLE DIN. So why wouldn't an aftermarket work?

DIN AND DOUBLE DIN are INDUSTRY STANDARDS. Meaning when you say "din" or "double din" thats it, theres no if ands or butts.

Any din or double din you purchase will work. Simple as that.

Here is a hidden secret a lot of DSMers dont seem to realize. THE STOCK STEREO BRACKETS ARE THE BEST WAY to install any aftermarket stereo.

IT's the most secure and stable, the aftermarket install kits are plastic and stereo not secured by screws.

But if you are getting a double din YOU NEED your stock brackets, don't think there is an install kit for double din, since again stock IS DOUBLE DIN.

Thank you for the replies guys! The place told me that my Eclipse had 1 1/2 DIN and advised me against it because it would be a lot of work. Now that I know a DDX514 should work I will be purchasing that. Thanks again!

Well for other cars thats not entirely true, but for DSMs it is.

I definately agree with keeping the factory stereo brackets, best way to install a stereo.

FYI the factory brackets go for over $100 for the pair from the Chrysler dealer; I believe one side was $60ish and the other was $80ish when I called a few weeks ago looking to install my AVIC D3. Hope you kept them.

Drive down to that audio shop and slap the guy that told you that. Step two, remove your stock radio and bolt the brackets to the new unit, wire it up and screw it back in. After all that is done(should have taken about a half hour if you took your time and did everything properly such as soldered and heatshrinked all connections) proceed back to previously mentioned audio shop, find guy with red mark on his face, and smash his head into the shifter until he owes you a new one.
