Today I was just browsing around the local car lots as I do ever so often. Normally I do this to get ideas. (I am a Indust. Design student i.e. Auto Design) I have always been interested in converting from flip-ups to projectors of some sort...some kind of fixed headlight for the 1GA. Well, as I was cruising around town, I stopped to check out a couple of 300zx's...always looking for turbo cars to go test drive/romp on. Then the idea popped in my head of the possibility of modifying the 1GA's front clip to mount in a set of the Z32 300ZX headlamps...is it possible or has it been tried before? I have a wreck that I can certainly test it on if somebody has the actual headlamps. I might say to hell with it and just buy a set and then go to work (not on my GSX of course...has to be tested before I phuck something up) I think it could be possible w/ some fiberglass and rewiring. Anyone with input feel free to make or break this idea, but I won't start without some good ol' DSMTuners.com consultation :thumb: Any other ideas would also be considered, I am just in an explorative mood seeing as my car isn't running currently.

Just look at them and imagine the possibilities......=)...

This has been brought up n/2 times (where n = 1Ga owners on the board)... really should use the search function.

Short version. There have been many discussions about doing it in the past, and a few projects started. But all of them ended up tapering off and going nowhere. Yes, there's interest. But no, no one's actually gone through and made it work yet. The only conversion that seems to be done for the 1Gas is the 1Ga->1Gb fixed light/front clip swap.

If you can do it, great. You'll have a lot of bolt-on buyers (if possible), or at least people waiting for a writeup of how to do it. But don't fool yourself... it's a very big job.

this topic has been beaten to death.......someone was actually making a conversion but i dont think they ever finished. Do a quick search and you should be able to find the thread.

Actually, I know, I followed the one who had the vaccuum molding...all that shit. I'm wondering if anyone has ever considered utilizing the GZ32 headlamp buckets off of a 90-96 300ZX to make fixed units for the 1GA's. Not only might it set your car apart, but since I have parted out my Laser, I know that the flip up units can be heavy as well as the motors...so you would also shed a few pounds for the hardcore racer. I saw a guy with R34 tailight molded into the ass end of his 1G...I'm pretty sure fitting the 300ZX units wouldn't be too much of a task for somebody with
1) A Brain
2) Some $$$ to experiment with
3) A shop to work in

A little ingenuity can go a long ways. I'm just wondering if anybody has every tried out the 300ZX units in particular, and how hard it would be to wire up the lights to work with it...I imagine no harder than doing the 1GA to 1GB conversion.

I've thought about doing this. I actually photochopped some 300zx lights into a picture, but now I'm thinking of just removing the front lights (turn signal, etc) and putting lights in there. There is a member on here whose done something like this and it looked pretty good. The only question is whether to set the lights in an open space or make a body colored housing.

I don't know why nobody likes the pop up lights. Back in the 90's I had a black GST made in Nov '89. I never had any problems with the lights. I loved them. The style goes well with that of the rest of the car. The only thing I would have liked would have been HID's that were direct replacements for the bulb/housing assembly. Double hid's would look pretty good on each side when popped up.

Who dosn't like 1ga pop-ups? I personally like my headlights on my 90 Talon vs. the ones on my 92 Laser. The fixed lights just don't look as good. Granted, the popups look dumb when they are up, but then there is always the chicklet mod.

This is true...I love the body line of the 1GA, personally, I am not too terribly fond of the 1GB...But utilizing the 300ZX buckets, it would be possible to keep the body line, while not having to sacrifice lighting (chiclet mod) or style. You could even convert to HID and tint the glass covers, most especiallyon a black, silver or white car. With the headlamps I'd like to try, you could maintain all the body lines of the 1GA and not have the dorky ass pop-ups at night...little, square pop ups are so 80's...now a nice rounded unit like the last Firebird had would have been more tasteful, but it wouldn't have kept that body line that we all love so well. Honestly, Mitsu should have used a recessed projector style light in the first place, and instead of correcting this when releasing the 1GB, they just screwed up worse with a nasty set of elongated headlights. Look at the '90 300ZX, it is a beautiful car, released the same year, and the 1G DSM's could have been just as nice, if not better, looking had Mitsu given more attention to headlights. Now the 2G's are just the opposite, started out pretty ugly...not a big fan of the boat-on-wheels look front fascia and the 1GB-esque headlights...but the 2GB is a work of art...if only they had kept the 6-bolt, eh? 3G is a joke, but whatever. The 4G is also a work of art...but if you have read the background on it, it was designed to follow the 2GB and somehow that shitty 3G ended up in between...so, that is why the 4G is a nice car, now if they will only bring back the GSX platform, a 4G63 or even a 6G72 w/ some turbochargers and an AWD tranny, then we'll be in business. Until then...we'll have to stick to our DSM's. Anyways, keeping the 1GA's body line is a must with me...that is why I wished to utilize the 300's headlamp bucket. We'll see, might have to take a trip to the U-Pull-It tomorrow.

i say go for it man, i did this to my 87 RX-7 when i had it and it turned out very nice. I dont like the look of the yellow car but maybe with out the front it would look good.

Those are the coolest looking headlights I've ever seen on a 1G OMG

You Europens are crazy when it comes to customizing cars. :rocks: The only thing I dislike is that front bumper( a little to wild for me)

just for a bit of useless info if you look at the Lamo diablo headlight and the 300zx you will notice they are the same. Because the enginers at Lamo like the design and bout it off of Nissan. Or so i was told a abig 300zx nut friend of mine.

if it matters anyway i converted my frount end from 1ga to 1gb using aftermarket kit, hood, fenders, headlight's n' corner lights came out pretty good IMO

Has anyone thought of using some older grand prix lights? Find a way to completely clear the 90-91 front lens, and then mount the rectangular g/p lights in there?

I think that this would be absolutely sexy...
