I planned on running a 50 shot(NX wet kit) when i started building my NT '91 4g63(113K miles) but a timing belt incident a few weeks ago has given me the option to replace my head gasket. If I put a metal head gasket on would a 75 shot be safe? Probably only hit it 1 time/month or less so not spraying a lot.

What gear and rpm level do you guys BEGIN to spary?

Thanks

spray that bi*** in first. i usually start around 4krpms. but im warning you, if you spray in first, you will not be able to start spraying in 2nd later on. you will be dissapointed in the power gain if you spray in second. first is insane.

Do you think the rods, pistons and rings(all stock NT) will hold up to a 75 shot? The head gasket better if I am going to put a metal one in. THe only reason why I wouldn't want to spary in 1st is I break loose going into second pretty hard and chirp 3rd. I still have the stock 14in rims off the 1.8L(motor swap).

ya you loose some traction. when i hit the nitrous on at 4k in first ill screech the wheels a bit. but it is an amazing boost of power.

umm i don't quite understand why you would want to hit in first,if i pull my car to 4g's i start to spin and it doesn't stop, even when i hit second at a good rpm it'll spin,i don't know if canadian cars are faster or wot but i can't see why you would use nitrous in first or second gear,i've got a 93 1g 2.0 and i know for a fact if i hit in first or second i'd blow a gear.Peace!

you must have the worlds fastest NT if you spin your tires when at WOT above 4k rpms in first gear. or you have the worlds crappiest tires. there is no way your tires automatically spin when you past 4k rpms. no way. unless your saying if you launch then but i dont think thats what your saying. you spray in first and second cuz thats when you get the most acceleration gains. you would not "blow a gear" if you hit it in first or second thats just F&F talk.

haha F&F talk, thats wot i thought you guys were talking about, and yes i say WOT instead of what it's a habit so i can't explain it,but i'm running 16" goodyear eagles, fairly good tire, and yes when i pull my car to 4grand quicly not launching, any car will do that of course it'll spin automaticly if i keep accelerating and same with second if i keep the rpms up when i shift it'll spin some more, alot less but still alittle spinage,my car is fairly stock so ii dunno how i can explain it,maybe it's just one of those cars(shrugs) anywho why wouldn't you unload in 3 or 4th to get complete pull threw all gears instead of unloading in 1st or 2nd,theirs already enough pull their,so you have no problems off the line, when you hit 3rd unload and get the same pull same with 4th,least that way you get great pull in all 4 gears(i'm leavin out 5th since it sucks in our cars) and you whoop some ass when racing?? just my 2,i'm goin to bed.Peace!

there is something extremely wrong if your a nearly stock NT and your wheels spin anytime you pass 4k rpms at WOT. unless its raining or something, in that case mine does too. but i dont think that turbo guys spin like that either so you have some problems. and the reason to spray in first and second and not 3rd and 4th is because you dont get the same pull. you accelerate so much faster if you spray in first and second then you do if you spray in 3rd or 4th. you will yield a lower time if you start spraying in first. plus you can spray all the way through the run instead of just 7 seconds in 3rd. plus, looking at the time slips, a high 14 sec 1/4 mile run your speed will be low 90's. my 3rd tops out at mid to high 90's, so i might not get there.

well i guess my car is just a monster then but it spins those rubbers over 4grand,thats not launching at 4 grand, punching it int he rain or snow and wotever its just normal everyday weather good accelerationg and it'll break loose if i pull hard to 4 grand,i can't explain why but it will everytime, when the weather gets better(not so rainy, cold) i'll get a video of it,i'm sure it's hard to believe by you're response's but i'll bust out the camera to show wot our canadian cars are made of haha.Peace!

Rainy, cold? Theyres your problem, you must be driving on ice. But anyways, i wouldnt suggest spraying in first honestly in a FWD car. Ive seen people have a hard enough time to cut 2.2 60ft's, let alone with spray. I think itll cause more problems then good unless you have some nasty slicks.

well, as someone who has a FWD and does spray in first, i say do it because your wheels will chirp a little bit but thats it. just flip the switch when you get to 4k rpms or so.

by the way he said it was in regular weather not rain or ice, and i dont believe it.

spraying in first seems dumb ... its just going to cause problems and is your car really "faster" from it? You might drop a tenth or 2 but who cares. Once you start running respectable times then a tenth or 2 might make a difference, but not if you run 13s or slower.

Are you Joking? Sorry i dont have a big bad GSX, but .1-.2 seconds is a huge gain for an NT. and it will take more off then that. the lower the gear is that you spray, the faster you accelerate, plain and simple. and if you spray in first, not only do you accelerate faster then any other gear would, but you also get to spray a lot longer. will people with no experience with nitrous stop telling me how to run my car that i have tested to see what works best.

heres a quote from DSMJim when i asked him this same question in august.

Hey, quick question. is it dangerous to spray in first gear? cuz i hear all these guys talk about how there gonna spray in 3rd, and when people ask me i say i spray in first. i always get the response that im gonna blow my tranny . is this true? I always wait to hit full throttle till at least 4k rpms. ive only gone through one bottle, and i havnt done it every time, so i havnt done it that much, but is it that bad? thanks

Spraying in 3rd gear at 3,000rpm is harder on the motor than 1st gear at 1,000rpm. THe motors ability to rev in 1st is 10x higher than 3rd. Your trans will blow if you have too much hook. On the street all your going to do is spin the tires so your not going to blow anything.

In my VR6 with 22x8x15 M/T Slicks I sprayed virtually out of the bucket in 1st gear with 100hp shot. As soon as the car moved about a foot or two across the line I flipped the switch. I never blew anything because the slicks would spin. Say I put on a 24.5x8x15 slick I would have a whole lot more traction and would have probablly blown a shaft comin out of the hole like that but not with the smaller slick. It all depends, on your car on street tires it really doesn't matter. Street tires suck no matter what brand you have. A car with any type of HP will never hook up on a street tires, doesn't matter what it is.

and like i said, my tires chirp a bit, then its all power to the ground from there. they sound like when i shift to second hard, just a chirp.

exactly .... your tires spin ... how is that making you faster??? If it's all about 1st gear then explain to me why someone with a 1.7 60 foot may only trap at 110, but then with a 1.9 60 foot they can trap at 112 the next run? This happened to me actually and I could never figure it out. Whenever I had great 60 foots the time and speed wasn't as good as with a little slower 60 foot. Not trying to make fun of you ... but it's hard to believe spraying 1st will drop you more than .1 - .2 sec if anything since tirespin doesn't mean faster times. If you car WAS however a gsx then I totally agree that it would help since you wont have these TRACTION problems.

i wouldnt quite call a chirp a traction problem. a split second squeek isnt gonna cost me a huge time loss. and my tires dont even chirp every time. sometimes they dont but for the most part they do. plus, DSMJim i believe said he was running a 100shot, while im only running a 75 shot, and the guy here is only talking about a 50 shot. he will not loose any traction with a 50 shot. i barely felt a 50 shot(although 3 people were in the car).

about the different speeds, well a bad example but one that still shows my point, is if youve ever played need for speed underground LOL you know that if you spray your NAWWWZZZ early, you get better acceleration, but you run out early and have to "all motor it" for the rest of the way. while if you spray later, you dont accelerate as fast to the point you started spraying, but then the spray pushes your top speed higher. but this is all with a supply of nitrous that runs out, while in real life you can spray the whole way down. bad example but still shows my point.

it might be hard to believe that if would drop you more then .1 or .2 seconds, but (at least for 2gnt's) my strong gear is 2nd and 1st seems pretty weak. i think the only way to believe it is if youve ridden in a car that sprayed first. it is a whole different world of acceleration.

yea I see what you're saying. Actually I rode in a friends rsx-s which ran a 15.2. Then he sprayed a 75 shot and ran a 14.3 .... I know it makes a big difference, I just didn't think it was so drastic just from using it in 1st gear since the gear is so short anyways and traction is a problem if you do more than just a chirp. I know on my 2g n/t first gear isn't strong by any means, but it goes by pretty quick compared to 2nd or 3rd for that matter. Didn't mean to start and arguement. :thumb:
