What are the Pros/Cons to owning a 1G or a 2G DSM (besides the obvious cosmetic differences). I've heard more Cons to owning a 2G than owning a 1G so, someone please clear this up for me.

use the search function. anways a quick rundown

1gs have
bigger turbos
bigger intake manifold
better bov
better flowing head

pre may 92 cars have 6bolts which dont crankwalk, 2gs get allot of crankwalk.

2gs asfar as i know just have abetter exhaust manifold,tb elbow and higher compression...., tey also weigh abit more.

theres more indepth disscussion

2Gs are newer cars.

Otherwise, it's pretty much up to your aesthetics. I have both, and like the 2G a whole lot more. But it's not as good a car. All the way through, it just feels cheaper.

My first DSM was a '95 Eclipse GSX, sold that and bought a '94 TSi AWD, both cars had / have more than their fair share of problems, the 1G is faster, and after a bit just a better vehicle in my opinion...

As was previously mentioned.... The head is a TON better, the turbo is much larger, if you're planning on keeping it mostly stock for awhile, all the boltons on a 1G AWD in decent shape will net you looooooooooow 13s, and on a 2G looooooooooooooooooooow 14s. That's really generalized, but if you're serious about going quick it's a bit easier with the 1G, and you can always make it handle better with suspension.

All that said... They're still DSMs so they'll fall apart as soon as ya get one. Pick your poison.

Take it for what it is- free advice.

Look to what you want to do with the car.

the 2nd gen looks amazing, it's heavier, and has a crappier driveline with the suckiest turbo.

the 1st gen looks... anyway, it's light and has an amazing driveline- big turbo, better head, bigger intake, bigger TB, better BOV

I went for a 1st gen my reasoning

get 2nd gen TB elbow (done)
get 2nd gen Exhaust manifold
get 2nd gen MAF (done)
get 3rd gen lifters ;)
get bigger brakes somewhere!

you are now lighter, negating the need for the higher comp pistons (though they still aren't a bad idea :) ) and you've got all the good driveline, with the better 2nd gen revised parts.
Yeah, you're still ugly, and yeah, the parts are all older- but you'll probably break most of them soon enough anyway :)

For 2nd gen, you've got killer looks, wider stance, better wheels, better brakes stock.
you'd need

6bolt block
14b turbo
1st gen bov
1st gen head
1st gen TB
1st gen intake

you have higher comp pistons, which negates some of your extra wieght, you'll spool a little quicker, but be a little more prone to knock- you can't adjust your timing, and you've got ODBII, but you look amazing, and the only things you needed to change were drivetrain related.

Here's the toss up- most people opt for a better BOV, a bigger turbo, the MAFT or DSMLink...

so either way, you'll likely replace all the goods anyway.

So figure out what you want the car for...

I wanted a sleeper, and something cheap. 1st gen FWD.

Each generation has its strengths and weaknesses. Its all up to personal preference and what your goal is. If you want to go fast for cheap, get a 1G AWD. If you plan to look go for looks and speed, a 2G might be more for you. Its all up to the you.

with all of that said... its up to you man its all personal preference you know the pro's the con's so you just gotta go get one now..either what whatever you buy we all support you cuz its a DSM. but i disagree with one thing...and that its not cheap to mod a DSM atleast mod them right....it gets expensive quick and might take away parts of life that you wanted to spend your money on..

Heh, I'm glad I went with a 1g. They are ALOT cheaper to buy, and I like the looks quite a bit. I think 1gs can get to looking pretty bad ass. Is AWD really that great? I have FWD.

well awd weights 250-300 pounds more, more matinance involved and you will obviously be launching it so it would be more prone to breaking.

On the otherhand the traction and control are the best, they handle huge turbos np where as fwds can suck ass on the 14b at times. AWDs are good for people who like to goto the track and achive the best possible 1/4 times.

I own a FWD with 300+ hp and i spin all the way into 3rd, so with that being said FWD's arnt 1/4 beasts like awds but are lighter and have longer gears with the less possibility of things breaking or needing matinance.

FWDs are really fun on the highway will slightly walk an awd with same mods. and with not being able to lauch like a awd there isnt that presure to lauch it hard and be ashard on the overall car.

I like the looks of the 1st gen also. AWD is great. :talon:

What do you mean by "they have longer gears" ?
