doing a little research for my friend's girlfriend. she has a 93 awdt automatic that has a high idle that appear to be caused by a bad exhaust manifold gasket either at the motor or the cat. she doesn't want to go crazy on it but she would like to look into possible performance replacements. i've been searching but most results i seem to get are for the n/a motors. anyone have any recommendations? the only two companies i can come up with are buschur and sbr and i've heard some not so nice things about sbr. anyone have any other suggestions? not looking for short/tubular manifolds unless thats really all thats out there. thanks.

You dont need a tubular manifold, you can easily find a 2g exhaust manifold at extremepsi.com for cheap and it will bolt right up and flow better. But before you go replacing this, it sounds more like a stuck thermostat or a bad isc motor. Replace those 2 pieces first before getting the manifold and see if it solves your problem. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

well it surges/high idles only once its warmed up...and once it starts doing it or gets to the point it blows smoke out of the gaskets. but i will recommend those as well.

Well now that you mentioned this, it sounds like maybe the head gasket needs to be replaced asap. Through what gasket is it throwing out smoke through ?

The gaskets should definatey be replaced, but im not sure that's the high idle culprit. Before anything she shoud invest in a logger to see what her car is doing. It can be alot of other things such as the ISC like Dsm2nr89 mentioned or even the FIAV.

Af far as a performance manifold, if it's a daily driver I wouldn't recomment a tubular one. There are alot of cast ones out there for pretty cheap. I'm using a ported 2nd gen manifold that I picked up for $40 and ported myself, cant get any cheaper than that :D

exhaust manifold gaskets, at the motor adn at the cat. not around the headgasket. she doesn't intend on doing any serious tuning with it but a data logger may not be a bad idea. i think they're gonna work on this and see where it goes from there.

The 13g has an off-center turbine inlet and is much smaller than a 14b turbine inlet, which a 1g m/t turbo exhaust manifold is designed for (2g is similar). Seen here: 4G63T Turbo Mounting Gaskets

I would simply port the auto manifold and 13g turbine inlet if you are on a budget and aren't looking for anything too serious. I'm not sure how well you could get a m/t mani to match the 13g, even with porting.

If you ever planned on a fairly cheap upgrade, grab a m/t 1g ECU, injectors, turbo, exhaust manifold(preferably for a 2g-better design and less prone to cracking), and FPR(not sure if it's absolutely required) all at once. Cams are also more aggressive in the m/t 1g's. This is just one route, but there are many others depending on your goals.

i think she jsut wants a slightly beefier daily driver...she doesn't want to get too into it, maybe auto-x it drag race it occasionally but not much. but i didnt know there was that much difference between the AT and MT motors, i thought it was jsut turbo and ecu. thanks!

bump for a few more answers. if she went to a m/t manifold would we really have to change that much? you can't just swap manifolds?

You can, but the flange inlet/outlet won't line up correctly with a 13g, although they will bolt up IIRC. You won't see much of any gains just bolting on a m/t mani to a 13g, perhaps even a loss from the flanges being different. Everything works as a system, that is why I recommended the list above from a m/t car. If you don't want to swap everything, just port the a/t manifold when you take it off for new gaskets.
