.I own a 97 spyder that is in a overhaul process
Its not a DD car and now where even close. This is rwd conversion. Having a issue as far as the rear goes. From what I have read certain year explorers have the same length 31 spline axles as a 1 g gsx. So that said problem solved. But from what I read 1g rear s wont go into 2gs just want to know y. Even if replace everything? Subframe, suspension etc??

Explorers have a solid axle under them, these cars have rear independent suspension. What are you trying to achieve here?

sorry, did that post from my cell phone. Anyways i own a 97 spyder that i deemed my newest project. I am converting it over to a rwd platform. I do understand awd would be easier, but i just wanted to do something a bit diffrent this time around. So my question is, Will a 1g rear fit into a 2g eclipse. Im not asking if it's a direct bolt up, lord knows that would be too easy. As i was saying newer model explorer use a a independant suspension. They use a 31 spline axle and a 8.8 rear. 1g gsx eclipse have swapped over to the 8.8 from the explorer as well as 9inch rears. So i am looking to adapt a complete 1g gsx rear end to my 2g. This would allow me to use the beefer 8.8 rear with a unlimited supply of aftermarket support as well as beefer axles. I know the suspension is diffrent between the two eg: 2g uses a double wishbone. Has anyone attempted to swap the rears? If so what are the hiccups.

On a side note other then ladder bar, 4 link suspensions and tubbed out tubular rears does anyone know of anybody that has adapted a rear using anything else? The 4 link wouldnt be bad just didnt want a crazy tubbed out rear.

What are you talking about. You want to know if a 1g rear will swap in there so you can put a 8.8 inch rear end and axles in there? By the way, a spyder is a horrible car for a rwd swap. It is way to flexible. You need to atleast built a full roll cage.

Holy hell. The subframe will be reinforced. Do you have any input that matters? so far you told me the spyder chassis is weak and explorer are solid rears. Are you aware that camaros, mustang, etc, etc are drop tops as well and carry loads of power? secondly there hasnt been a solid rear explorer since 2005. Right about the time mustangs went ir. Delete this post i can find out on my own just figured somebody with a clue would chime in at some point.

I well have a clue of the setup, but the way that you are asking makes no sense. You are asking if a 1g rear diff will fit the 2g, than you are asking if you can put the 8.8 rear independent there is the 1g diff fits. That is what i've gathered. IT has nothing to do with me not understanding any physical part of the car, it's all me trying to comprehend what you are asking. Be more clear instead of just copping an attitude. I am using my free time to try and help you out.

let me rephrase.

will a 1g gsx rear subframe and suspension fit into a 2g spyder. I need a subframe that will allow the use of a stronger rwd diffrential. I would use the gsx from a 2g however with a transmounted engine and a th350 transmission i was concerned i would snap the rear axles and destroy the rear. Basically i am just trying to fish for ideas for a rwd rear setup on a 2g eclipse. Ive seen a few builds that used a 4 link subframe. I was trying to avoid have to tub out my rear and keep more of a sleeker stock look.

btw i am seriously freaking tired. I retract my rude statement and sorry for lashing out. Just so tired of running into dead ends with the same question.

The 1g subframe would take alot of modification to make work. They mount totally different. I'd say in the long run you would probably be better off to just go with a solid 8.8 or 9 inch with a 4 link. It will hook better than the independent rear, and be stronger.

Will a 1g rear subframe bolt into a 2g? NO

Is a 1g rear stronger than a 2g? NO the differentials are the same.

Does a Ford Explorer have a IRS? Only as of 2011.

Does a Ford Mustang have a IRS? Only the Cobra models from '99-'04, everything else, including the most current models have a solid rear.

Is there a bolt-in solid axle? NO, everything other than a DSM rear will require modification.

What is a strong solid axle that can be put into a DSM? The easiest is a 8.8" from a Explorer because the gear ratio is the same as a DSM, however, if you are RWD swapping, the gear ratio won't matter so you can run whatever axle you want.

What is a strong IRS rear that can be put into a DSM? The 3kGT VR4 rear is doable, but I am not sure of the modifications required and the only swaps I have heard of are on 1gs anyways.

Well that's answer that, thank you. Time to look for a 4 link with coilovers. Any ideas on decent company's?

The best way would be to built a chrome moly subframe to mount the 4 control arms to and buy the weld on brackets from summit racing along with the adjustable arms. You can most incorporate the stock struts and springs by welding a mount to the top of the axle tube for the bottom of the strut to bolt to. You will also need to incorporate a panhard bar onto it to keep the rear from flexing left to right.

Hate to bring this thread back alive but i am wanting to do the same thing.. i believe.. LOL.. I want to take a 98 eclipse gst spyder and make it a awd.. now i know this is a task not lightly taken. I am already having a roll bar welded in to support the body flex and im already doing cross member tubing along the uni-body to accommodate airbags so that will strengthen the body. but now it comes to the irs since it is going to be a complete fab anyways i was wondering if the 8.8 gto irs setup would be a good way to go?? 2004 Pontiac GTO Rear End Assembly IRS 2005 2006 | eBay

Bringing back this thread. If somebody would be so kind, would you by chance know if a 1992-1994 rear 1g eclipse gsx lsd axle fit a 1995-99 Mitsubishi eclipse gsx lsd differential?

I understood what you were asking the first time you asked it but I don't know the answer to your question. I am also frustrated when someone asks a question about a project they are doing and there are more replies of how dumb the project is than there is the actual answer to the question.
