1g or 2g based on budget

I am currently buying a car, and want a dsm. I can't really decide between a 1g or a 2g. Performance wise which car will set me back the least to get the same hp, overall reliability, handling, and drivability? My budget is 9,000 total (car+ parts, i will do the work). Basically i want to know which car will give me the most bag (zoom) for my buck 1g or 2g.

As i understand it the 2g's 7-bolt is more prone to c-walk where the 1g isn't. The 1g would be cheaper but would require more replacement parts especially as i increase horsepower, where the 2g would be more expensive but would require less maintenence. But if my 2g walks then i need to replace the engine anyways, which is alot.

I'm in a toss-up, please help me decide which way to go. Once again, I don't care about looks, bling, ect. Just performance, handling, and everyday reliability (this will be a daily driver).
 
They are pretty much identical. It's a little bit easier to get a 1g moving with a small budget. The 2g will cost more initially of course, but you can plan on more maintenance needs on the 1g. I think you would be fine either way. Even if a 2g cost you 6 grand, you would have 3 grand in mod and maintenance money. That will get you well into the stage II mods and over 300hp. If you scored a 1g for 3 grand you'd have 6k to spare, which would get you pretty much anything you want. The biggest decision you need to make is if the car you are looking at has a lot of near future maintenance issues. A need for a new timing belt, clutch master, o2 sensor, TPS, shocks, brakes, etc etc is what is going to eat into your cash. Find something well cared for and you won't regret it.
 
If I were you, Id buy a nice 92 Talon TSI AWD, one with a 6 bolt, and a good body, for around like $3K AT MOST, then you can fix it up realll nice, I think the 1Gb's are the sexiest DSM's I want a 1Gb sooo bad, I might just do a conversion on mine............................
 
1Ga = older and cheaper to obtain. the famed 6-bolt block can haldle well over 550whp based on countless track cars and reported accounts. Crappy 1g maf that overruns at around 300 hp. The 1g head and intake manifold is said to flow rather well at high revs and many builders upgrade these componets last in their building process. Smaller runner exhaust mani provides lower flow (for the really high hp guys), and is prone to cracking. Much better/bigger 14b turbo thats good for about 300whp. EPROM ecus (reprogramable) seam to be scattered among cars and years in the 1g era. significantly lighter than 2Gs.

Excellent maf design that has not overrun even when the stock block has been pushed beyond it's limits. In stock form the 2g head and intake mani does not do very well for overall horsepower but provides great throttle response. When ported though, it is said that there is more "meat" to work with thus giving a more precise port tune in the hands of an experienced technician. all stock 1995 ecus are EPROM. all stock ecus from other years in the 2nd generation are not. Better flowing exhaust mani and o2 housing. 0.7:1 higher in compression.

If performance is your primary concern, I would say go 1Ga all the way! It has much stronger internals, better flowing head and intake for overall hp gains through out the rev range and the bigger stock turbo. Plus it is lighter than the 2G. Of course you'll have to ditch the maf even to push the stock turbo but that is better than having to go internal to realize 500whp reliably. . . GEtting the 2g upgrades is rather cheap. and then you'll have the best of both generationgs (including the light weight of the 1g for real cheap).
 
Since i'm also looking to buy another car.


anyone think it would be fun/worth the effort to tear my engine, trans and usable parts out of my car, rebuild them and upbuild them .. then drop them into a new frame/body southern kept tsi/awd

basicly. find a blown junker and restore it with my parts off my perfectly running 92 tsi awd?

125k miles for 3,500

Is this a resonable price? I know we can probably talk them down LOL.
 
Being the owner of a 1Ga I love the damn thing! Flip up lights will never go out of style! But with all due honesty, you can get a 1g real cheap. If you get a 6 bolt that will save you some time down the road if you wanna go crazy with the engine. But I would deff make sure that the tranny is working well and do everything in your power to maintain it properly.
