whats up guys, first off how the car is running, it has no power, which is because of the compression on 2 and 3, no. 1 is at 100, 2 and 3 are at or even under 5-10psi, and 4 is at 120. how if it was the rings there would have to be a little smoke comming out the exhaust but there is no smoke what so ever, not even at cold start. so could this be becuase of timing eing off? it seems to idle pretty good but its high idle, about 1500 rpm. at 1k rpm it runs a little rough, i checked the timing by putting a socket ext on the number 1 and turning the motor by hand got it to the top and the markings lign up but could it be set at say exhaust top center instead of ignition top? just seems like if there was NO compression in 2 and 3 it wouldnt be the ringsbecuase it doesnt smoke, anyone heard of anyhting like this? thanks

When you did the comp test did you also run some oil down the cylinders to see if changed your comp values? If not do that, see what happens.

Also a leak down test will tell you alot about the top end.

I had a no start issue i couldnt figure out.I had my car towed to a shop, and they called and said my compression was 130 on cylinders 4 and 3...cyl. 2 was at 0 and 1 was at 25.I asked about the timing and bent valves and the mechanic said nope belt looks good your all lined up.

First thing i thought were the rings...didnt say it out loud though.I asked what he thought he said they would pull the cover and get back to me the next day.I called the shop at the end of the following day and talked to the mechanic. He said "your head gasket was done and thats why it wouldnt start".

Cant say much more than that though.I believe it was last Monday that we talked and he said they would have it done Fri. I havent heard from them and i didnt call to see if it was done.I figured they would call me if it was finished.

Im going to give them a call and see if its done tomorrow.I have a bad feeling that they are going to say the new head gasket didnt get it running.

Then im going to be bent that i just spent all that money on a head gasket that was supposed to get my car running and didnt. We shall see....

ah taht sucks, seems like that might be the problem with mine too, the head thats on it is like new and the only ticking sound it has is the lifters, no other loud out of place noises.. but seem like if the head is almost new the head gasket would be too.. but ill just have to pull it and see, hopfully that got your running and will get mine too! haha

Classic case of head gasket is blown between 2 and 3. Rings are fine.

thats a relief haha, that makes about 5 votes on the head gasket! as far as replacing the head gasket, is it better to go with stock or the upgraded metal ones, ive heard that the metals ones wont seal right before and also that the stock ones get blown out by upping your boost, i dont really plan on goin past 20-25 boost anytime soon, chances are 20 :thumb:

haha nice, i just thought of something, wouldnt there be coolant in the oil or oil inthe coolant if the head gasket was gone?

Not always good sir. If the material goes bad between the two cylinders and not the oil/water passages then you will only lose compression. There is a good write up somewhere on here by Craig explaining Headgaskets and any question you will ever have about how they work on the DSM :thumb:

Well just a heads up...my issue wasnt a head gasket after all.Although ill be getting a new one anyhow.I had two bent exhaust valves apparently.Very little coolant in the block.Weird because apparently my car wasnt sucking coolant back into the motor i guess.I always made sure the overflow was at the full line and not once has my car ran hot.

I do remember when i first got my 1g that the hose that goes into the overflow wasnt connected to the nipple at the bottom of the tank.I just figured regardless if it was connected or not it would still loop the needed coolant into the motor...apparently not.Thats the only thing i can think of...just weird that it
never registered as running hot on the temp gauge.

Hopefully you figure your issue out...probably is the HG for you.

ah that sucks man, well i dont know theres a good chance i have a few valves bad too, who ever had the car before me replaced the head and put a metal head gasket, which could mean tht they didnt deck the block and the metal gasket isnt sealing at all on those 2, but seems strange for it to already have bent valves for a head that new, it still looks like its new LOL..

Problem solved! Johneclipse just helped me pull the head and there is about a half inch of the gasket missing between 2 and 3. Never seen a gasket that bad haha. Thanks for all the help guys, ill be back on the road shortly! :hellyeah:

I would recommend having the head checked and or decked. New head bolts and new head gasket. There has to be a reason that headgasket failed if its only been on the car a few months
