I have a 93-94 Galant VR2 COP setup (1308) that my buddy gave me, I need to rewire it to work on my 99 GSX (with 95 Eprom DSMLink)

Whats the best way to go about this? Its really neat and nice all wraped together, Im at a real loss and dont have much experance with anything electrical. Is there a team or shop that has done these types of conversions?

Thanks

hey man im sure you dont want to hear this but.. thats not a good idea to change to COP, its not needed your stock coils will do alot better than the COP will with your mods... and it will prob cause more problems. your stock coils will work til around 500hp just an fyi man but good luck. in others words its gunna be a waste of money.

Unless its overall harmfull for my car, I would like to do it.

I allready own the CoP, so the cost is nothing. It makes the car look alot cleaner, less wires.

And my personal fav, I dont have to worry about spark plug wires anymore, I felt like they keept going bad on me.

it will be detrimental because with the cop there will be 2 coils going to charge between fires versus one, resulting in a weaker spark. unless you can tune dwell time, don't do it. you're best off getting a cdi to fire your cop.

At low boost it will probably be somewhat decent, but up the boost and it will probably not run very good. I tried it on a couple cars, and the stock car it wasn't perfect but not too bad, but on my car with 400hp it ran like junk.

You need an aftermarket CDI box for the coilovers to function properly, or at least an adjustment of the coil dwell settings in the ECU (which I've never seen anyone post the proper settings).

probably because most people come to the forum and see others with bad COP experiences, and abandon it, instead of trying harder by properly tuning, and then giving useful information for everyone. if i had the money to even begin this i would do it.

Im slightly baffled on where all this bad news for CoP's is coming from.
I havn't followed the forum very hard for the last year, but prior to that CoP wouldn't make you, but they wouldn't break you either.

What has changed?

THE BAD part of COP on a stock'ish ECU is that you now have 2 coils trying to charge enough to fire correctly because although it's COP they are still firing in waste spark configuration (meaning each coil is getting less charge voltage/amps ) where one 2 post coil will charge better on the same amount that will now be split betweeen 2 coils.

Only if you have management to run sequential spark can you gain anything from a COP setup besides looks. Believe me I looked into it and even posted a "why is it bad" thread to get these answers.

now get a full on stand alone with 4 ignition outputs and 4 fuel outputs and you cna run sequential fuel and spark and gain economy and a better spark, but with a stock'ish ECU being piggy backed by some tuning device can still onlyt run waste spark and you will gain nothing but looks and loose performance

On turbo alone ( a beat up one) i made 431 hp and with spray made 503 all on stock coils with nothing more than a DIS-2 hooked to them... If i were to split it to COP but still in waste spark i doubt i could have kept the fire in the cylinders for those pulls ( i know my specs say 332/312 but that was just my last "official" pump gas test where i got a printout to post up here.. the other runs with the high HP where from a free dyno day at a place here in town and was done on ethanol e85

you would be best off getting coils that have igniters built in and going from there with dwell control.

Thats starting to add up.
It seems this is all recent information that is just coming out of the woodwork.

CoP used to be looked good apon even with just a Stock ECU style DSMLink to do thing.

Maybe I was just wrong, Thanks.

I wrote the COP article listed above. I won't get into the arguement of whether or not its worth it. I will say two things: 1. Its your car and ultimately your decision to run or not to run COP. Do what you want to do. 2. I ran 25psi on my cop without a CDI and did not experience blow out. The plugs were gapped at .028". At shootout last year it ran a 12.6. This was with a slipping clutch, shattered throwout bearing, and over 100*F track temps. Not an amazing time but far from terrible. But do note, running a COP setup without a CDI is less efficient than the stock coils and plug wires. I was able to push more boost than most on my setup but I am sure I was right on the edge of blowout.

If you check out my write up you should be able to figure out the wiring, and I would be glad to help anyway I can.

Good luck,
Justin
