Hey guys,

I have the engine out of the car and I need to save the steering rack before scraping the shell.

However, I am wondering if I could remove the front subframe by just undoing the four big bolts around its corners and then the struts or is it more work?

If the subframe is out, it is so much easier to work on the steering!!!!

It is a 1G AWD.
 
When I replaced my steering rack, I dropped the whole subframe so that I could install polyurethane subframe bushings. I can't remember if I just loosened the 4 big bolts or if I took them all out to remove the rack, but it made things a little easier. The only other thing holding the subframe in is the rear motor mount, but you don't have to worry about that since there's no motor in the car. I also assume you have the transfer case out already, that makes the job much easier.
 
the engine compartment is gutted out, no engine no tranny.

I am just wondering if the four corner bolts would let me drop the whole thing and then remove the steering rack,

I just don't see anything else holding it up.
 
It's the 4 bolts as you mentioned, plus 1 stud & bolt on either side. It's the one under/next to the a-arm. Not sure how common this is but I snapped one of the bolts while removing it so be carful and use PB Blaster or similar if needed.
 
Remove the 4 large nuts, and I believe there is 2 smaller ones near the lower control arm towards the rear. Remove the steering shaft bolt completely. Either pull the shocks out or discconect them from the spindle as well as the brake lines and power steering lines and it should come right down.
