I have a cracked exhaust manifold on my 1g beater. I don't plan on running much boost on it.

I have been avoiding buying a welder for the longest over the years but I was wondering if this might be an easy first project for someone trying to learn to weld.

Sure I can buy a 2g exhaust manifold but I don't want to go that route for a few reasons that are beyond the scope of this post.

Is welding an exhaust manifold off the car an easy first project?

Thanks

It depends on the length of that crack, and placement. Keep in mind a surface weld will be very temporary, you need to grind out a trench along the crack and fill it. Even still, it's likely to crack not long after.

I would just replace it, they're cheap enough.

Sounds like more hassle than it is worth then if a repair may not be reliable. Thanks.

It's good to practice cast iron welds if you have the time and money to do it.

But it requires a lot of time and steps to do it properly, if you're are looking for a replacement soon, I think its better to just buy another manifold and just put this other manifold aside to repair on your free time.

Thanks for the input.
