Has anyone replaced a wiring harness in a 1G with the motor still in the car?

Does anything need to be removed? Or are all the sensors accessible with the motor still in?

And how long will it take assuming everything goes fairly smoothly?

thanks.

The main harness would be easy to do with the engine in the car. The hard part is getting it passed through the firewall behind the blower. I've never done it with the blower housing in the car still.

Everything is easy to get at except the knock sensor connection, that can take a minute.

I don't know about your mechanical ability, but I'd say an hour and a half.

Thanks
You mean the A/C blower? How hard is it to get that out?
My mechanical abilitly is about a 5 on a scale of 1-10. But I'll have a good mechanic helping me out.

I just finished removing my 91 gsx wiring harness. Let me tell you taking the harness of the engine is the easy part. Taking the wiring harness off inside the car is hell. I took my dash board off to get to the blower. On top of the blower is a couple of nuts holding it on and a couple on the bottom. Also, there is little push clips holding the blower on. After that is removed it takes a little elbow grease to get it out. I would rather replace my engine again or remove my tranny than do this again.

Uh oh.
Is it all one piece? Or is there a clip for the engine bay part, and a clip for the interior?
If it's two pieces, I can probably reuse the interior part.

It's all one piece, you have to get it from the interior side behind the blower. If you have skilled hands you can get it out without removing the blower, but since you're totally blind if you haven't done it before it will be very hard to do.
There are three seperate housings on the heater system, take out the ac piece (middle one directly behind the glovebox first), then you can remove the blower housing.
You want a picture of the bare firewall on the interior side in that area so you have a better idea of what you're looking for?

I had to remove the main harness to do the engine swap...the engine bay is easy to take apart and hook back up...you can hook it back up real quick when you have another to look at so you see where the harness runs...the interior i had to take out the center peice of the 3 black boxes on the drivers side...after that a few screws and such and itll come right out...pull it out from the engine side not the interior and be sure not to tug to hard and pop a connector off somewhere that you have wedged :D The main/ecu harness comes right in over in the corner and most of its connections are there and the rest to the ecu along with a ground, i think i had one other that hooked to the gauge cluster harness that ran across...any questions ask away its all fresh in my mind

That would be great. Thanks.

Whiteshadow- What do you mean by three black boxes on the driver's side? Thanks again for the help.

In order to get the engine wiring harness out you HAVE to remove the dash and the 2 large black boxes on the right side of the car behind the dash. Its a half a day project, good luck

Half a day is not a problem. I was thinking more like a whole day. I will probably have access to a full shop for a whole day, and a skilled tech to help me out.

So, what I gather so far is that I need to pull the dash, and pull either the middle of the three boxes, or two of the boxes. And that the rest of it is easy.
