1997 tsi awd help so stumped

Hi guys new here been just trying to wing the dsm world by trial and error here's what I have going on bought the car the guy I bought it from couldn't put back on timing belt . So I put it on got it timed drove it 13 miles and the timing belt tensioner broke causing the whole motor to be wrecked so I bought a jdm motor from online put the motor in started it up and I could only get it to run on cylinder 1 and 2. 4 or 3 didn't have spark then the ignition went funky and it wouldn't stop turning over got that figured out. The friend I had helping me work on it broke a pelves of the plastic timing belt cover which in return got jammed into the crack pulley which stripped cogs off the timing belt so out came the motor pulled the head off luckily no damage done so i figured best time to put new pistons into motor put those in and arp head studs in with performance head gasket. So just put the motor back into car tonight went to turn the key to turn it over and nothing it just dimmed the lights in the car so got under car and jumped the starter with a screwdriver and it just clunked took the starter out of car and yet nothing with the key jumped starter and it spun no problem put starter into car and still nothing with key jumped starter with screwdriver again it clunked like before but this time smoke came out from the throttle cable box that has the throttle and cruise control cables in it what is causing it......

Sorry for the long write up figured I would just give u guys all the info on the car to this point and it could help diagnose the problem

Bad starter ground. Had this happen plenty of times. Trace the ground wire an relocate it to a good ground.

The ground wire that is in the same harness as the hot wire I put that ground right to the ground on the battery it self still no change also any reason as why it would only run on the two cylinders I changed out the crank and came sensors cold that have been the case

Spark is controlled by these things: cam and crank sensors, power transistor, coil pack, mechanical timing and ecu. Check them. If the starter bench tested ok and it clicks when starting its either bad ground or poor power. Im going with bad ground but if you grounded it to the battery it is probably the power wire.

When I rebuilt the motor I put new cam and crank sensors in hopefully that fixed that OK and what I am really stupmed with is when I took the starter out I hooked it up like normal so I could watch what was going on so I had the power wire and that small wire hooked up I grounded the starter to the block and hit the key and nothing but yet I jumped the post where the power wire goes to the power post on the starter to the small wire and it spun right up could there be something maybe wrong with the start its self does it sound man dsms just complicated

Also are there any other wireing harnesses out there to clean up the engine bay at all

Well I changed out the starter thinking mabe just mabe that's it turns out no luck iam gonna send this car to a shop hopefully they can fix it iam only going backward on this car not forward

I'm also a bit confused on how 1 & 2 can fire, but not 3 & 4. That's not how they are paired.

I was thinking the same thing, I'm betting that he has the plug wires on the wrong cylinders.

Or maybe them there JDM motors are what-yer-called wired diff'rent. Yo!
