London,
hey, a good friend of mine just purchased a 1991 Talon TSi.

It has 16g turbo (small) 2g maf 255lph fuel pump autometer gauge set, etc etc.

so on his way home, he smashed third and I believe he has bent the shift fork. I will be replacing his transmission for him but I would like to know if there is anyway to tell what the spline count on the output shaft would be without removing it, I heard they switched midway through 91? do you think I could call Mitsu with the vin and possible get them to tell me?

any ideas on how to tell? maybe date of birth?

Thanks guys! and sorry for the first post being a dumb question, just kind of important and I wasn't getting anywhere on other boards cause no one seems to actually know, they just speculate.

Its not really a dumb question...I would call up the dealership and give them the vin, and the production date of it. They should have an awnser for you...no telling if its the right one;) JK. Im going to do a quick search on how many splines it has, and Ill post what I come up with...

I called mitsu, they couldnt look up a eagle vin, so I called chrysler, they looked it up but could only tell me manf date.

Feb 5th 1991.

Mitsu is going to call me back, luckily I have friends who are well known dsm guys around here or I think mitsu would tell me off! LOL

Ok, I got your awnser, and sorry about taking so long...had to go to work for a bit.90-early 91s have a 22 slpine tranny/t-case. late 91s and up have 23 spline tarannys/ t-cases. The 23 spline is the stronger. If the manufacture date is before May then its probably the 22 spline if mand. after May then its the 23 spline...not 100% sure if thats when they switched over, but they switched from 6 to 7 bolts in May of 92 so I figure they may have done the same with the splines.

right on, thanks a lot man, much appreciated.

good friend of mine just told me if I have to I can just swap the shaft itself out too.. just take out a circlip and change em over.

Im not an expect of tranny's, so your friend may be correct...lets so what other have to say...Ill also do a quick search and see if I get any hits off it.

yes you can but it would be easier to change the female shaft that goes into the transfer case if you have the right one that fits the new trans. i did this and it only took me about a 1/2 hour but you'll need a bearing puller.
