1990 Shifter Question

I would like to buy a short shifter for my 1990, but none will work. I took the shifter and base from a 1992...is that all I will need or will I need the cables too? Thanks.

No idea which model I have, but prior owner managed to wedge a B&M of some model into my GSX. Don't really like it... very little positive shift feel, lots of wiggle. But it works, and the only time I've missed a shift with it, it's been my own damn fault. :b
