I've looked around all over the internet and I'm starting to get a better grasp on tire and rim size. Right now I have stock tires on my 1992 Eclipse GS and I'm going to be picking up 17 x 7 rims from a friend and will be getting new tires soon as well. My question is will 17 x 7s fit ok on my car or will there be anything rubbing? The car hasn't been lowered either. My second question is what types of tires are good for performance / daily tires? And would I be ok running 225/45/17s?

Will 17x7's fit? Yes, you could also fit, among other sizes up to 17x8's or 18x7, 18x8.

As to what types of tires you'd like, go to tirerack.com. They have all types of reviews and data on tires. You can get opinions anywhere, but from one person to another they differ. One person might say x tire was the best performance all-season tire ever, and someone else could say x tire sucked and had horrible qualities. It is best though to stay away from the cheap tires such as Nankang, Wanli, etc.

To see what tire you can fit on your car with it being close to stock diameter, go to http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html . Just enter your current stock tire size and after entering new tire, it is best to be under a 1% difference.

I'm running 17x7.5s, and I get no rubbing, with 225/45/17.

Best street radials I've run are Eagle F1 GS-D3s. Expensive, but a true e-ticket ride that just wouldn't let go. Also wore out in three months, as I was having way too much fun. Current ones I'm on are Raptor ZX... decent cheap-ass tires. Nowhere near as much grip, but can just buy four sets for the cost of GS-D3s.
Not sure an NA will really need that much grab though.
