i have a 95 eclipse with a 420a. Its mostly stock with eliminated vac lines. The only vac line it has goes to the egr but that has never been a problem until now. I changed my head gasket and now it idles at 1500. I also have a CEL which i did not have before. It does not surge or hiccup. When i push the throttle it will drop to 900 then go back up to 1500. I unplugged the idle control valve and it did not change. I know its not the Idle screw because when the throttle is closed it doesnt't even touch the little screw. Does anyone know if i have an OBDI or II port and how i go about checking the CEL if its OBDI. Thanks for the help.

Is the throttle cable hanging up? Do you hear it sucking air? Did you put a new intake gasket on?

i have two guesses but they maybe way off.

first, if the 420a is anything like the 4g63, where the throttle cable bracket mounts to the intake manifold it could be your problem. if it has one of those adjustable brackets make sure its not holding the throttle open a little.

second: the way you said it acts when you step on the gas pedal makes it sound a little like a vacuum leak. like the line between the intake and brake booster is not hooked (again if the 420A even has this). had a car do that when i forgot to hook it up. and if it is a big vacuum leak you should hear it a little.

those are my best guesses.

i did not put i new intake gasket on because i never pulled the intake manifold off of the head. The vac hose to the brake booster is connected (it does have one LOL) but as far as the throttle adjuster goes and the CEL i'll have to check it out tommorrow becuase its dark and raining.
