I just wanted a good estimate of how much people charge for boring the block because some guy is trying to charge me 400 bucks to bore the block I am referring to where the pistons go . I got je pistons 0.20 over bore so i just wanted to know if 400 bucks is to much

Dude, your not going to find your answer here. Thats something your going to have to figure out yourself. Grab your yellow pages, look for Machine Shops in the Automotive Section and start calling the numbers. One place I called quoted me 25 a hole, another place quoted me 150 a hole. Some places that were cheaper did extra stuff for the money and some didn't... You have to call around. There is no way any of us will be able to help you out, unless one of us live in your city and have done this already. But, I live in Albuquerque.

It's true that the prices will vary according to geography, but you really shouldn't spend more than $150 total. As Josh suggested, you should call various machine shops and ask for their rates. Furthermore, ask what, if any, services are included. Do they hot tank the block? Do they paint it?

I think $400 is excessive by any standards.

There is ONE way I would pay 400 for him to HONE, BORE, HOT TANK, and PAINT my block...IF Jessica Alba had hot wild sex with me while the block was in the shop!

400 might be good if he Bored, Honed, Hot Tanked and painted the block, and then assembled the crank, rods and pistons to thier proper torque specs with some good lithium grease and had it ready to be bolted to the head....I was quoted 650 to have my block Bored, Honed, Hot Tanked, Painted and the head Ported, Polished to race specs to fit the new oversized valves and fully assembled.

Many places do use Lithium grease, as it was popularly used in the past. Molybdenum based greases are more prevalently used today by engine builders. It is extremely slick - even as a solid - and doesn't separate like Lithium soap based greases tend to.

OP: Call various reputable shops within a distance you are willing to travel for machine work, and go with whichever seems to offer the best deal to you.

well I think i got a good deal. I am going to get my cylinders fine bored and HONE, Resurface , HOT TANK, and disassemble the crane cams and all that for 200 so yeah he told me that after he did that i should get my some good bearings but i dont know what he was referring to? Also he said i should get the pistons and rods and all that shit weighted because if not im going to have bog problems for 150 bucks more.
Also one more question since i am putting bigger pistons on my car and i had bought me a stock zise head gasket will that matter or does the gasket need to be bigger?

i just skimmed through and didnt see a remark on the .20" over yet......... so ill go ahead and say it.

i think u mean .020" over ROFL :thumb: anyways about the boring of ## block............. u shouldnt be paying anymore than 100.00 to get ## block bored 20 over, i dont care where u go 400.00 is a rediculous amount to do that.

You must have missed Defiant's post above yours....

OP - I recently had my engine rebuilt and with an overbore of .020". I also had them hone the cylinders with a torque plate. Just for that work alone, I paid $155.

Make sure he didn't quote you for a complete machine job. Many times there are other services that they do and you just don't initially account for them in a quote. Services such as checking the align hone, degrease the block, assembly-clean the block, etc. These could add up to another hundred or two depending on the extent of the work.

For just a bore job, $400 is way too much. But if he's doing other nessacery work as well, then it might not be a bad deal. We would need more details to make an accurate conclusion.
