yet another logger question after doing research

ok after reading tech articles and most of the other logger artiles im still at the question of wich to use? i recently purchased an HP mini laptop for my logging uses. i have gone over tunerstein and on their site they have the logger for pc though they also say that the pc logger program isnt well suited. so when it comes down to it im primarily asking wich free ware logger program can i use with my laptop and what cable/interface would i need for my 97 gst spyder?
also for the analysis of the data does the programs advised to use give calculated maps for the A'pexi SAFCII?

Save a little bit of money up then sell the SAFC to get a 98/99 ecu, a 2.0 tactrix cable, and evoscan. Altogether that should be about $300 and it will be world better than any tuning system you can piece together with basic software and an SAFC.

I'm running an Evo 8 Ecu which is pretty much the same upgrade, but I had to swap some wires around.
After I sold my SAFC II and my stock ECU, the upgrade (including the Evo 8 Ecu, EvoScan software, and the cable) cost me $25.
