wont run over 2000 rpm

The car is a 1.8ltr 1g 93 model daily beater, but it wont go over 2k anymore. It has been doing this for over a week now and I just cant figure it out. I can drive about 35 if i take off in 2nd and shift to 5th as long as it stays below 2k.

Once I hit it the car boggs down almost as hitting fuel cut.

does it do this in all throttle positions?

If I had to guess, I would first say the ecu?

Its probably ignition related. I haven't really studied the 1.8 motor, but do they have distributors? If not, try pickin up a new ignition coil. I'm betting its a simple problem that can be easily fixed. Yeah, try that and let me know.

My friends car wouldn't go over 3k rpm's and all we did was replace the o2 sensor and it revved up just fine. Although when it wasnt revving above 3k, it would sound like it was hitting fuel cut but if you watched the back of the car, it would spit out a lot of black smoke, it was definately running rich from the o2 going bad and just dumped so much fuel in the motor, it couldn't go above that certain rpm.

I wouldn't suugest driving the car anymore until you fix the problem.

I am having the same problem. In park the engine revs fine. In drive there is a loud air like noise from the engine under acceleration. The car will accelerate fine for 1 second then bog and hesitate. If I let off the throttle I can repeat this procedure. Also when the hesitiation period occurs it is emitting black smoke. I found a "sweet spot" I'd say at just less then one quarter throttle where it will slowly accelerate smoothly and not emit any smoke. This happened out of the blue. One minute running fine, next horrible. NO Check engine light. How about yours. When I get car home I will post results.

check the coil, that was my problem, could be the wires as well, when you hit the gas does it go then hesitate then go then hesitate ect. that would be the wires or a faulty plug.

I've learned to check plugs, wires, coil. in that order first in any such problem now.

that sweet spot sounds like a throttle position sensor. If you could datalog it, you could find out if the throttle position sensor is working. Find a local dsm guy with a logger that could help you out.

actually, could you even datalog a 1.8? probably not. pick up a tps sensor from a boneyard.

The air hose to the throttle body blew off. Musta been a loose clamp. Wow. The car barely even ran without that on there.
