Which brand/style rims for my car?

Hi all

My 1990 Talon Tsi is in bad need of new tires. Instead of getting tires for my stock rims, I want to get some new rims now so I don't have to buy tires again when I upgrade.

From my research on this site, I have decided that I want a 17" x 8" rim with around a 38mm or so offset. I plan to run a 235 x 45 or 235 x 40 tires on them.

I have never bought rims before or payed much attention to what is a good wheel. I have heard of the mainstream brands like enkei, rota, etc. but I have no idea which are better or look good on a 1ga.

My main criteria for the wheels are lightweight, Non-flashy (no chrome etc.) and 17" x 8" with around 38mm offset, good quality, and look good (clean) on a 1ga.

My budget is around $1000 or so, less is always better.

I look forward to hearing suggestions or comments.

is that $1000 just for rims or for rims and tires?
Also what color car?

the $1k or so is the budget just for the rims.

My cars color is black cherry, I believe its called. I have seen a few cars with the same color as mine with bronze rims, and I think it looks pretty good.

I got 17x8s on my DD Malibu. I recommend going 245/45 if you can fit without rubbing. The 245 fills the rim up pretty good and would help prevent some curb rash.

I would definitely go with wider tires if I could, but 245's might rub without any fender work, which I don't really want to do at this time. So maybe I should be looking at a 7.5" wide rim then.

I'm just trying to get the widest tires I can fit with stock fenders. From what I have read on these forums, some people have used 245s on stock fenders, but it is not guaranteed to fit without rubbing.

If it matters for fitment for the rims, I have koni yellows w/ground control coilovers for my suspension. I just have to install them.

I picked up a set of Enkei SC03's not too long ago for $996.00 with tires mounted and balanced, centering rings, locks, etc. They're a little over 20lbs for the 17" X 7". I got mine at wheelsnext.com, which I don't really recommend using. Took forever for the rims to get to me and every time I called to find out what was going on they told me about a problem with this piece or that piece that was delaying the order. Never would have let me know if I didn't pester them once a week. Just search around, tire and wheel deals are always popping up out there.

Rota Slipstreams look real nice on 1Gs. Not too flashy, but have a subtle, racey sort of look. If you look through the galleries you can probably find a few nice pictures of them, they seem to be very common on some serious drag builds.

A lot of guys also find rims of Evo 8s, I think the six-spoke rims are by Enkei, and they look real good on 1Gs as well, and they might even already be in the 17" size you are looking for.

I would definitely not go with Rota Slipstreams, Slips are more directed for Hondas, I would go with Rota D2's.

I do like the rota slipstreams, that is a nice choice. The d2's are also nice, they are similar but seem a little more flashy to me with the rivets and all. I like them both though.

Why are slipstreams more directed to hondas? From google searching they seem to be pretty popular with the honda crowd, is it just that a lot of hondas use them? Or is there something else that makes them honda rims. A lot of dsm's seem to run them too.

The evo8 rims look good too and seem to match exactly what I want: 17" x 8" and a lot of people seem to be running 235 45s on them too with no fitment issues.

Evo8 rims 20.5 lbs. , ROTA D2 17 x 7.5" 22.5lbs. , ROTA Slipstreams 17 x 8 20.2 lbs.

So they are all similar in weight.

some bronze VOLK CE28N's look really good. go with some 235/45/17 KDWs

Those Volk ce28n's look really nice and are very light, unfortunately they are a little expensive. I'm seeing prices of $700 or so each rim which is more than I want to spend.

The KDW's are one of the tires I'm considering, I need something that has good wet traction.

there not the best brand but they seem to do the job... style wise yet lightweight...! i got them brand new with z rated tires for 400...! i thought they were worth it...!!
