I had a random question.. I've been told different things about brake pads and I wanted to know once and for all the answer...

Which type of brake pad is better.. Ceramic, HPS, or HP Plus from the Hawk product line? Some people tell me that ceramic is always the best and than others say HPS.. Just thought I'd throw the question out there..

The standard materials for brake pads are organic, metallic, and ceramic. Ceramic is the best, for the HP and HPS I do not know.

Depends on what your goals are.

Ceramic is about a step above OE

HPS is more of a daily street driver but with improved braking (most likely what you want)

HP Plus is for drag racing. They stop hella fast but are known to be louder and wear down rotors.

I have Brembo slotted/drilled with EBC Red Stuff pads and I love them!

Ceramic is close to stock except they are low dusting and last longer. Sometimes improved braking but it depends on the brand.

As for the other two McFox's description sounds pretty good.

I believe the OP meant to compare Hawk products.

All I can say to that is, decide what you REALLY need in a pad compound, read the application descriptions and choose for yourself. Only you know how you drive. :thumb:

The ceramics aren't going to be much of an improvement at all. I have put the HPSs on 6 different cars and all got improved braking. Dust is not an issue with the HPS. I put HP pluses on once but they don't work well until they're heated up and they make a lot of noise. They will have your car doing endos but they aren't fun to live with daily. They are designed for autocross and the punishment that comes with repeated high speed braking. For a daily I would suggest the HPS compound. They only grind when you really get on it other than that they perform just like the ceramics without lasting as long.

Brake pad selection will depend on your actual, real-life, honest use. Not fantasies sitting in front of the tube with a beer watching LeMans for the 300th time, but what you actually do with your car. Do you spend two hours a day in 10mph commute traffic, stopping every fifty feet? Do you regularly make a run down Kingsbury Grade into Genoa? Do you autocross? Do you road race? Do you just drive too damned fast?
Determine what your car's doing all the time. Almost all pads are good for three or four really, really hard stops in a row, but are still good for normal, cold, traffic-light and commute use. Good commute pads essentially stop working after very few 80-to-0 uses, but racer pads can be ineffective before they get warmed up, or if they get rained on, and are a nuisance in day-to-day use.
Evaluate your demands and select your pads to suit.

Sorry, I was in the Dominican Republic.. just got back last night.. I don't autocross... my car isn't a daily driver, but I do drive it a few times a week.. pretty much never in the rain and pretty much never in the snow. I do not go to the track a real lot. I do drive pretty fast when I do drive it though...

For that I would recommend the HPS pads :thumb:

Yeah, that's what I thought.. I currently have HPS in the front from when I did my brakes a while ago. I had to do the backs two weeks ago and bought ceramics, but when I do the fronts again whenever they wear out I'll put HPS's in again. Thanks for the help guys..

I use Brembo drilled and slotted rotors with PBR Axxis metalmasters. Had very minimal brake dust and good stopping for street use. Never took it to a course but did use them on the dragstrip. I will be ordering them again.
