When do I upgrade my ignition system?

I can't post anywhere else because I'm still a "Lurker" :sneaky: Given the approx limit of the stock ignition coils at about 400hp, has anyone proven the coil-on-plug systems to be superior, and to what kind of power levels (without MSD assistance)

hey man i just built a set of intrepid coils were tryin them out tomarow i can let you know how they work out i got some pics in my photo gal. check them out and let me know what you think

Who told you that??? We run 9's with the stock coil pack, and we're a "tick" over 400hp. :)

We ran stock ignition all season on all of our cars, no MSD, no nothing. Not one single issue.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I was just doing some reading and read some of the more knowledgeable members saying that you can "expect" something over 400hp. I realize there are always exceptions. I was just wondering what the point of the coil on plug was if we're making so much power on the stockers. And like wickednightmare is doing, people are going with the dodge coils. I guess i'll just keep going till i can't!

my big thing is the whole wires bein in the way thing and i have been in cars running the coil setup and i loved it seemed like it pulled harder and idles smother

I allways heard that you need them over 700whp but im sure it is on a case by case basis. My power should never be that high so im not to worried about it.

I bought a Coil on Plug last year. I like it alot... I did it with a complete rebuild so i couldnt tell you if it was a huge difference or not. I like it just because its much cleaner looking. If your going to switch to a different manifold relocating the coil packs is another problem. I was spending 75 bucks a year on MSD wires, so i decided to just soed the 300 and go with the individual coils im happy i did it.

What kind of Dodge COP?? would the Magnum and 300C Hemi COP work?? MSD style.... :thumb:

You need to upgrade the ignition system when the factory system can no longer overcome the cylinder's environment to create an adequately strong spark over reasonable plug gaps. Most people will never reach this point.

Thank you...

Most people only use COPs for looks or to remove clutter (which is the same thing IMO)

And most just throw them on without the right Ignition System to control them (Like an MSD)

Not knowing that they're only hurting themselves in performance ;)

drove the car today i have to say it didnt hurt the performance i beleave it helped i can feel a difference in my wot pulls maybe u should try one :)
