Ok, i've read for hours all the threads on smoke, but I still need help. I have a 96 n/a turbo Spyder and I am wondering whats causing the smoke. When I get down on it really hard and then let off and put it in neutral then rev it up it will spudder and blow one puff of smoke. I'm not sure if its blue or gray, but I know blue means its burning oil and I havent had to add any oil. The car still pulls really hard and runs great. That is the only smoke that ever comes out of the car. Whats causing it?

Thanks, Nathan

If it's not oil causing the smoke there is really only 2 other things it could be. Water, or Coolant. Water = no big deal, the smoke will be very light almost translucent and dissipate quickly. If it's Coolant then your smoke will be a definate gray/white and will not just dissipate upon exiting the tail pipe. it will linger for 5-10 seconds (usually). If it's definately white then you are most likely dealing with a slight break in your head gasket causing your engine to burn off some coolant when you get on it. Simply because your heat will raise in the engine and things will expand a little leaving small cracks for some coolant to squeeze through. Could be no big deal but i would take it easy on your engine unless you feel like doing a head job soon.

The last but rare possibility i don't like the outline is the possibility of piston rings starting to go. Very bad, but very unlikely in an N/A. Hope this was some help. There is a kit you can rent at autozone to test your coolant for exhaust gases. That would tell you if you have a head gasket problem.

Good Luck

Correction i didn't notice that your car was turbo even though it says N/T. Maybe you should take the piston rings thing much more seriously.

Could be the valve stem seals. Let the car idle for about 5-10 minutes then rev the engine pretty good and if it's smoking after that, that's one sign of valve seals. Also, after a engine decel, especially coming down a hill, it will smoke if you get on it right away.
