Well the other day my transmission..well, decided to not go into gear anymore..So i got her pulled home and started to pull the tranny..Took me about 3 hrs all in all to get it out..but over a 2 day period. Anyone with questions on removal. I'll be more than happy to answer and help out.

When I go to reinstall I will try to take pics, and do a write up. I definitely could have used one. Instead I bugged Snoopy...Thanks John:thumb:

Not exactly sure...There had been problems with the throw out bearing that needed attention..and my synchros had pretty much been standing on their last legs, so it's needed a rebuild for awhile..When it decided to stop going into gear is when I decided it was time LOL

I noticed that there wasn't anything on top of one of the shift cables to hold it down, I could pull it back, and it would come out of the "U" type bracket..I'm thinking the top of that popped off one night..which made it not go into gear any more.

Things I'm replacing along the way are

Shocks
Springs
Tranny
Axles
Clutch

Do any of you guys know if when I take the transmission to have it rebuilt, if I can tell him to rebuild it using the SOHC neon tranny parts. Instead of NV-T350 parts. I know alot of people swap the neon gearbox into the Eclipse bellhousing, but I don't know what all is included in a complete rebuild, or if ANY parts are reused.

Thanks

Hope this helps man! Peeps at 2gnt have been sticking 3.55 neon gears in our trannys for a long time!

Ah Ha, now I understand what your trying to say on 2GNT. The rebuild kit for the neon or 2GNT is the same kit. The difference in the neon trans and the 2GNT (depending on the year of neon) is the final drive and 5th gear. Neither is really stronger. It is said the 3.55 is geometrically stronger because its smaller but the difference is so minor, its not funny. Besides, to do that you would need to buy a Neon trans. To buy the output shaft and 5th gear from the dealer you would be looking at about 1800.00 in parts.

Puting a .72 5th gear wont help you much on the highway. I did this with on of my 2GNT's and it dropped the rpm's by 200-300 at 80mph. Not a big gain.

The 400.00 rebuild kit only comes with synchro's and bearings. it doesnt come with dogs, any gears, or the slider assemblies.

Ok awesome, I'm glad you understood what I was getting at haha...Thanks for that response..It helped alot. Today I'll call the guy doing the rebuild to see when I can get it to him. Hopefully I'll have that and the new clutch in by the end of next week.

About the clutch. I was thinking about going with a SPEC stage 2. It's rated at 360 ft./lb. so that should be more than enough. I don't plan on ever exceeding that amount of power. I'm trying to not spend an arm and a leg too...Any comments or recommendations?

Talk to Andy at South Bend Clutch in Indiana. They make some beautiful clutches at a reasonable price. They can also custom make you a clutch in the future if you ever want one that is unique. They have some of the best Customer service i have ever seen.

They stayed open late for a guy i work with so he could pick up his clutch, he was comming from northern IL. Little bit of a hike as you can imagine, really courteous of Andy.

I have seen some spec failures on 2GNT lately. One first hand last weekend. Not sure why the quality has gone down or what the deal is with spec in the last couple years. The one i dealt with this past weekend was not even a turbo'ed 2GNT and the guy takes good care of the car.

Damn you for getting ahead of me LOL....I haven't even touched my baby since it was started up last to let my buddy hear the most horrible screeching the world has ever heard. Sorry bout last night josh, you were sending me those pics and my damn laptop overheated and shut off LOL...by the time I got back downstairs from my shower and noticed it was off, it was time for me to go to work. Good to know it didn't take all that long. Mine is definitely coming out this weekend seeing as the delivery date its replacement is scheduled for middle of next week :rocks: I love reloading the FedEx tracking screen and hoping it changes locations ROFL Anywho, hit me up later when u get home sucka.

EDIT: andy @ sbc = :thumb: http://www.dxdracingclutches.com/

haha it's cool X..I figured something like that happened.

Yeah the guys around here made it seem damn near impossible to get that tranny out..They're 4g63 guru's though. I'm probably the only one modifying a 420a past I/H/E around here.(that I know of)

I'll get in touch with Andy today. I'm about to take my tranny to the shop for the rebuild. Hopefully by the end of next week she'll be up and running.

Well I just got off the phone with Andy from SBC. Awesome guy, thanks for recommending him. I really feel like I would have made a mistake going with the SPEC stage 2 clutch.

I'm going with his Rally edition, it's bascially his stage 1 clutch, but he said it will out perform the SPEC stage 2 clutch and comes with a much better pressure plate.

Thanks again for the recommendation, you saved me money and gave me peace of mind..

Good, happy to see he helped you.

Compared to a 4g63, our tranny is a walk in the part to remove. Actually compared to most cars...LOL out trans is very easy to pull.

Terry

that is awesome to hear LOL...I just need to get off my lazy azz and do the work hahaha. not really a pressing issue when you're still waiting for stuff to arrive I guess.

Well I just figured out what the problem was with the transmission..Well, one of the problems.(I think)

On the yellow circles, they're held on to pegs on the tranny with a pin. On one of them that pin had broken, allowing the arm to just rotate on the peg, but not actually turn the peg.

Anyways the transmission is getting torn apart tomorrow and started for the rebuild. I also found out the noise problem I had mentioned before in another thread(tapping sound when clutch pedal is in) was in fact the throw out bearing. The fork that the bearing rests in on one side was worn about 1/4 an inch. I'll take pics of it when I get the new one.

I should be ordering the SBC clutch tonight. I'm about to go outside and pull the stocker off.

Xmasta, get out and get started on the damn car. Just because you don't have parts is no reason to not take the tranny off. You might run into problems when you do have the parts that will make you mad because you will have to wait longer..

Wow that looks like work. I almost think it is easier to pull the motor then the tranny. If you take to south bend pm me with the specs of clutchs and prices they give you please. After I install my msns (thanks again terry) I will get boost happy and be inneed of a good clutch. Thanks

Well the clutch is off....Here's what I found when..

I don't know what it was that was rubbing against the teeth like that to cause them to break off and wear down. The TOB had problems apperently. Could that cause that wear pattern in the teeth? I don't really know what else it could have been haha.

Now I'm stuck on the flexplate..I don't know how to lock it in place..Right now it just spins with the force from trying to break the bolts loose. Any ideas?

You pretty much do pull the motor. There are 4 mounts total, 3 of which are connected to the transmission, and you must remove the nuts on the one connected to the motor, so that it can lower down. I know there is more involved in pulling the motor, but I was just getting technical.

I am trying to remember how I did this. I think I put a wrench on one of the bolts to hold on and used another socket to loosen the bolts. You could also use the other pulley and wedge it to stop the crank from spinning.

usually like 40$. Actual shop time, less then an hour.

And did your car make any noises from the trans/clutch area while the clutch pedal was out? any funny noises from it when launching?? My car has been making some funny noises from the trans I am trying to figure out.

Pay to refinish what? The flywheel? Our flywheels get replaced, no need to refinish one.

To get the flexplate off, if you dont have airtools:

Take a pair of vise grips and clamp the flexplate to the dustshield on the motor. Where the starter was is an easy location. Use the visegrips to clamp it tightly it will hold the plate from rotating.

I've got a quick ?...Terry, you'll probably know the answer. Not all of the bellhousing bolts are the same. I should have remembered what order they came out in when removing them, but I didn't. Could you tell me which ones go where. Some are shorter, some are longer, and some are tapered on the end.

thanks
