What is this?

I recently replaced the passenger axle on my VR4 and noticed that gear oil had been leaking got sometime now. THe axle was trashed and the seal was hard and cracking. I pulled out the seal to find what I think is a race? I took a picture of it, I do not have a great camera but you get the idea. I havent done anything to this part for it to do this and thought I would be okay since thats the way it was. Wow, was I wrong! The car has been out of the shop a total of a week for balance shaft removal, few bent valves, had FP2 put in, ARP headstuds, MLS gasket, install ported evo III exhaust mani. cut bumper last night to install front mount.......that time didnt come. I was driving to Walmart and heard a metallic rotational noise. Stopped the car fevved engine, hmmmm, all seems okay. I take off and roll windows down and it coming from the passenger side front. It has to be this RACE? I have been running this Gvr4 fwd due to the input shaft was twisted. Maybe its time to bring it back to its true self.........AWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was towed to local dsm shop this evening.....

Looks like that bearing is junk. There should be balls all the way around it.

Absolutely, from what I can recall. the balls should have a spacer between each one? Im sure this has gotten worse. I have driven the car approx. 200 miles since the install of the new axle. I knew it would be something bad to come but hoping no this soon.

this bearing is definatly totally toasted, even some ball bearings are missing.

He is at the DSM Gods waiting for some attention. Im sure to have them check everything over and possibly just go ahead and get an ACT 2900. Also, have them put in a new input shaft so I can get it back to AWD.

Anyone know what that is called? Is it a race or just a bearing?

That is going to be the axle bearing, what does the oil in the trans look like?
Where did that bearing go?! I assume the axle wasn't in all the way or maby the seal got screwed up and a rock or even the seal got into the bearing area?

the oil I drained was very metallic. Where the mystery ball or spacer went? I do not know at all. Maybe somehow this car prior to my ownership screwed it up but I have been patiently waiting to get started on this car. I took that picture before I put a new seal in and new axle.

Its easy to remenber the two! The bearing is what has the balls, cone, or needles in or around it. The race is what the bearing rides on usually on the out side of the bearing!

Race is on the top, bearing on the right, and the two together on the left.
