A friend of mine is having problems with his 97 Eclipse RS and would like to know what would cause no fuel pressure and no spark. everything is plugged in the fuel system correctly. If anyone knows it would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

The CAM angle sensor is what you are describing on the cylinder head near the valve cover, not the crank sensor. Cam sensor will not cause a loss of fire. When the computer does not see cam angle sensor then it will spray all the injectors at once (gang fire). Crank angle sensor is responsible for fire. The Crank sensor is located just above the oil filter on the passenger side of the block. Check the harness for oil saturation from an oil leak.

With a friend cranking the engine, check the asd relay output wire going to the coil. It's the middle wire, black with a red tracer. You should read battery voltage or 12volts which ever is greater. If you don't have power there then you need to find where the asd relay circuit is giving you problems.

Again... The Crankshaft Position Sensor is NOT the component mounted to the cylinder head, at least on the 2gnt which is the vehicle in question, that sensor IS the Camshaft Position Sensor and if you go to ANY chrysler, mitsubishi dealership or parts store that deals with the 2gnt engine they will tell you that.

The Camshaft position sensor does not register crankshaft position, it measures Camshaft position by using a target magnet that is installed in the end of the cam. The crankshaft position sensor uses a magnet inside the sensor to detect high and low spots in the crankshaft.

Feel free to research the 2gnt some more.

I don't know if 2g's have them, but I know the MPI fusable link is responsible for some spark as well, on a 1g I believe it powers the ignition system, hence the Multi Point Ignition fuseable link.

The 2gnt has two or three relays on the firewall. The one closest to the passenger side is the fuel pump relay. The one in the middle is the MFI (ASD) relay. The last one, only if automatic trans equipped, is the Transmission relay. If you do not have an automatic transmission then you do not have the third relay.

At key on, the Fuel Pump relay and the ASD Relay should both be energized by the PCM.
First you will want to check for fire at the spark plug wires. Insert a phillips screwdriver in to the plug wire and lay it close, but not touching, another piece of metal (within 1/4 of an inch). Have a friend attempt to crank the engine. You should see a good spark.

Reinstall the spark plug and wire before going on to the next step.

You can listen to the fuel pump for a "Whine" like sound when the key is initially turned in to the on position. If you hear this "whine" then the pump is working. Next you will want to check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail itself. There is a test port located on the fuel rail end closest to the passenger side strut tower. Take off the cap and use a small screwdriver to press in the core. This test port has a core inside of it exactly like a tire valve stem. If you can let the air out of a tire then you can do this next step. Press on the test port core. Be carefull because it may spray gas. Have a friend cycle the key from off to back on. You should have yet another burst of gas spray out.

Once you have done both of these steps then report back with your findings.

BUMP

OK, I have been reading this thread and I need some more info. I have a 95 turbo eclipse and I overheated from busting a hose. Now my car will not start. I turns over and but does not want to start. I have no fuel pressure as well. BUT every now and then the car will start but shuts off immediatly. I took the hose off coming from the fuel filter to the fuel rail and put the ignition in the on position and no fuel came out. I also cranked it and still no fuel spurt out. I reallly really need to get this resolved and cannot find an answer.

Will that "CAS" sensor have anything to do with it as you guys said? I have a feeling it's my fuel pump.
