as a recent victim to a exploding differential (gear teeth broke through the case) I am looking at other options.. I barely have enough money to fix my tranny much less buy a $900 quaife or kazz.. SO does anyone have the front differential welded and how hard is it to drive around normally?

Also.. my differential is still all intact, if I do decide to weld it is there any reason for me to buy a new diff.. since the teeth on the gears will no longer be a issue anyways?

welding the front diff. is a bad Idea. when you turn your front wheels have to go different speeds, cause your outside wheel has to cover more distance. if you weld the diff, the wheel on the outside of your turn would be tryin to go the same as the inside, this would cause the outside wheel to drag, and you would probably snap a couple CV-shafts or worse. Don't do it..... :dsm:

Sorry to bring back and old thread, but my friend and I were disputing about welding a FRONT diff on a daily driver. I told him that it would be a bad idea to weld it because of the same reason listed above about inside wheel needs to turn slower than the outside wheel during a turn. I'm also pretty sure it would have some kind of effect on the transmission internals to wear faster or cause more stress. He thinks thats it wouldn't cause much of a difference when driving and that welding it would be ok for a daily driving, without any ill effects happening to the tranny. Welding it would also cause tires to wear out faster. I'm pretty positive i'm correct but does anyone else have an opinion on it.
Oh, and by the way my friend use to own a few DSMs but at the moment only has a R\T Neon. He said that he's seen other Neon cars do it with no problems.
