Wastegates

wastegates are your boost controllers, plain and simple. without them youd never build boost, or youd keep boosting until you blow your motor.

the wastegate is a little flap that bleeds off exhaust flow and bypasses it around your turbine, to keep the turbo spinning in its efficiency range, and at youre desire boost.

wastegates are either external(attatched to an exhaust runner, or your 02 housing) or internal, built into the turbo.

when you use a boost controller, you essentially just tell the wastegate to open at a certain pressure, and remained closed below it

The evo3 16G is a prime example of why an upgrade wastegate helps. Many people were getting "creep" and even though they ported to theends of time, it was determined that the Wastegate was the only solution left.

Externals are there for some of the larger turbos. Sometimes the passage is too small causing creep. Since it helps to relieve gas/pressure, if you are running more than the gate can handle it will not release enough gas. A LARGE external is helpful in expelling gases.

Think of it as a funnel point were gas needs to exit to help "stabilize"(sp) the turbo pressure (psi). If you blow to much air it won't escape fast enough. If you cut the small hole on the funnel so it becomes bigger, you can blow more air through it. Upgrades are just LARGER holes and Flappers to cover larger holes.

another thing that seems to help get rid of boost creep is a setup like the hahn racecraft super turbos where you get the exhaust off the wastegate and the turbine to go through the same path after the turbine has been bypassed you can do this by take the center section of your o2 housing out(the part the seperates the wastegate gasses and the turbine gasses)
