was hearing a little bit of ticking but now car has trouble getting past 3000 rpm

ok so I just recently bought a 97 gst with a 6 bolt swap. I was hearing a slight ticking noise and had a slight miss around 2800 to 3000 rpm but after that it ran great. Today I was in 4th gear coming up on 3000 rpm and it just started shaking and wont go any faster. It mainly does it 3rd-5th gear. And if while it is doing that I push in the clutch and rev it kinda clears up for a second. any suggestions?

Time for the basics - Check plugs, plug wires, compression, perform a boost leak test and a leakdown test. Also check your timing and ensure that you haven't skipped out a tooth or two.

I had this happen on my GST. Change your spark plug and wires to see if that helps at all its usually just a basic tune up.

ok ill check the basics and get back with yall, also when I rev when it is having this issue it has a different sound coming out of the exhaust. the strange thing is when i am in neutral everything revs fine.

As mentioned, check your plugs (gap should be .028-.032), check your air filter, perform a boost leak test, compression test. If compression test numbers aren't even across or close to it, leakdown test. If compression test is ok, then replace your fuel filter, replace your spark plug wires.

I've had a sputtering problem when under load a couple times and turned out to be a spark plug that had a gap that was too big. So it might be a simple fix.

Also, that tick might just be "lifter tick" which is normal. Maybe youtube "lifter tick" to see if it's the same noise you have.

thanks guys for the helps, i went ahead and got a new fuel filter because i have been running seafoam since i got the car and the miss has been getting worse since. it seems to have fixed the problem, i guess the seafoam helped put more junk into an already old filter.
