upgrading turbo

Hey guys, so after finally getting my car running after a year of working on it I think its time to upgrade my turbo. When I got my car the last owner dropped a bolt into the 2nd cylinder head and blew a hole through the piston, put 3 holes in my head gasket, and did alot of damage. I have gotten the block rebuilt and bored .20 over with all aftermarket performance parts installed but the head is still stock. After that my fuel pump died so I replaced it with a walbro 190. One of my cam gears was messed up so I also replaced those with AEM adjustable gears. I'm still running a stock t25 on a side mount intercooler but when I upgrade my system I plan on getting a fmic also. My question is tho what turbo should I go with? I was thinking small 16g since it will spool faster and I didn't plan on running over 20 pounds of boost. Also do I need to do anything else with my fuel system? only think I have upgraded is my fuel pump. I'm also running a stock exhaust still but want to replace that but it probably wont be until later. I've tried search and found a lot of info thats been helping me fix it up but I'm still pretty new at this and could use some advice.

Your going to need need bigger injectors and a way to tune them properly

PSI is really irrelevant. You could run a big turbo at 10 psi and it would be like running a little one at 30, this is just a comparison so you get the idea. You should really have some type of goal, or else you'll just be all over the place. You did use oem timing components righttttt? You could run a small 16G but at very low boost because you will most likely hit fuel cut. So now you need to purchase a tuning device aswell. For injectors, you could go with evo injectors which are 550's.

DSMLINK would be your best bet.

I didn't know that, that is pretty cool thanks. This is my first turboed car I built an old muscle car and this is really different. I did use oem timing components just aem cam gears. I had the work done at the shop while they also rebuilt the engine. My goal is 350-400 hp nothing to crazy this will also be my daily driver mostly just to stomp my friends and show them DSM is the way to go haha. Now with the 550 evo injectors would i still hit the fuel cut? I've been checking out dsm link and its definetly the way I wanted to go so I can do the tuning myself since there is no place near me that does it.

I was where you were at a year ago. I installed a small 16g without touching anything else but it actually it hurt performance from the t25. After blowing that used 16g I got an evo3 16g with ecmlink, 190 walbro, evo 8 560 injectors, 3 inch turboback, and fmic. Performance is great now

I would go with either a small 16g or evo 3 but in florida I can't seem to find anything for sale. I just found some evo 560 injectors on ebay for $80 i'm about to buy them. The muffler shop down the road might make me a straight 3" pipe for pretty cheap so im thinking of doing that too. As for the fmic i was looking at the punishment racing fmic because it is cheap and many people seem to like it. Is there a difference between ecm link and dsm link?

Ecmlink and dsmlink are both the samething. I just call it dsmlink =D Not just me, almost everyone else >.> And yes, a 3" straight pipe would be great, it well sound loud though, but I don't mind. You could go punishment or vrsf for the fmic. The punishment fmic lets you keep the factory fog lights, the vrsf does too, but with aftermarket fog lights.

Sounds good, you could always buy a turbo from a member on here. I'd recommend punishment its a good looking kit and definitely helped with heat during the summer. Anything bigger then the t25 will heat soak the stock ic and heat soak sucks!

That's what I thought haha I don't mind the loudness either maybe it'll be louder then my dads harley \m/ I'll probably go with the punishment racing one then because i'm cheap and dont feel like replacing the lights. Damn man that looks nice! I can't wait to get rid of the t25 and get some real power. The engines ready for it but everything else is stock besides my clutch (which i will also be replacing again). Do you know anyone selling either turbo? I looked in the classified but there was only like 4 listings

That sounds good, but don't skip on tuning. You could always scout the classifieds for dsmlink. They go for around 450-500. Idk about it being louder then the harley, those things are loud as is

Yes thats right tuning I forgot haha I need a 95 eprom ecu with the soldered chip, and dsmlink? then i can just use my laptop to tune it im guessing. Yeah he has a screaming eagle exhaust with a ton of engine work i keeps setting off the cops alarm on his car next door haha

Straight piping would be very loud and harleys are stupid loud . Adding a couple resonators and a muffler will mellow it out

Ya the ecu wont know what to do with bigger injectors and dsmlink will free up some power.

Awesome I'll try and see if I can pick one up on here later today after having my block bored and a bigger fuel pump already its time for a tune. Does the ecu matter? I know it has to be eprom but can it be either 1g or 2g? how about fwd or awd?

the ecu has to have the eprom chip found in the 95/96 dsm's. You would take that and send it to the guys at dsmlink and they send the ecu back with the cable and instructions

If you wanna stay quiet you can find a flange on eBay separate the stock waste gate and exhaust out of the manifold. Dump the waste gate pipe into the ground, out the fender, or the hood to create more noise when boosting, but it will be stock quiet while not boosting. Only when you reach max boost and your waste gate opens will you have the issue of the po-po

Watch out for buying fake evo injectors off eBay. It's happened before. Good luck with the build.

Awesome thanks guys. I'll do some research before buying evo injectors so I get real ones. I'm going to be purchasing the eprom ecu and dsmlink today I can wait to actually get my car tuned properly so I can work on upgrading my turbo system

You have a 97 ecu so you can send it to ecmlink and they can convert it to EPROM, then your set!

You already have the 190 Walbro, get the 3inch catback, Evo 3 16G , ECM Link or Maf Translator, with some 550cc injectors and upgrade your intercooler. Nice little set-up

do you have E85 in Florida? If so I would go with a 16g with 1000cc injectors and you will have some fun.
