ok heres my problem i bought this car off of my brother and he did some basic mods he put and ported and polished evo manifold and a ported and polished evo o2 housing and the hot side if the tubo has been ported ive got a maft and hard upper ic pipe and ive gotten rid of all of my emisions (useless vacume lines and egr) ive hooked my boost controler up a ton of different ways and ive read several post when i put pressure with my air compressor to my waste gate actuator it moves but when its on the car it doesn't seem like it wants to open up i dont know if my accuator is bad or if there was a problem with the porting my brother did any ideas will help
 
this sucks i just spent the last 3 months putting together what my brother took apart thats what my brother said the problem was but i figured i would make a post and get some one elses opinion do you know where i can buy a bigger flapper and the aprox. price?
 
Im having the same problem right now. The problem is your exhaust being 3" flows better then the path through your wastegate.

You have a few options:
1. Get a smaller DP IE: 2.5" to the flex section
2. Port the path to the wastegate and the wastegate hole and install a larger flapper (chance this will work)
3. External gate


I have a 3" DP, and a 2.5" tubular dumped o2 housing and my car creeps to hell. 85% throttle brings me to 19 PSI. LOL. *nothing is ported tho* step was removed.
 
Going to a smaller downpipe to create backpressure is an inefficent way to solve your boost creep problems.

Open up the area around the wastegate. You can get at it a bit before you need to change to a 34mm flapper. Do some light porting inside of the exhaust housing to help the exhaust find its way to the wastegate when it opens up.

The turbine housing itself costs around $225
 
trust me i have done my research on this, and i cant "truly" say it is going to work because i have been wating almost 3 months to get my Monster Turbine housing put on that i bought from MachV, but it is almost garunteed...I have a dump and 3" exhaust and still creep...but with this Turbine housing it has a 38 mm flapper door and is all ported out to the max...best thing to buy to get rid of boost creep besides the ultimate way of an external waste gate...just save up for the monster turbine housing or send out your Turbine housing to Slow Boy Racing or someone who knows how to change the flapper

Smaller DP: Yes, but it would work.

A buddy of mine showed me the housing, it is probably your easiest and best bet (i forgot about it) I dont have the link anymore, but the link he gave me it was 199$.
 
i think im gonna with the flapper i hope that fixes my problems i can make one in my schools machine shop so its cheapest route what do you guys think yay or nay on the flapper fix?
 
when i would get into the gas on my car i would peg 30psi and you thought 19 was bad i wish i could only hit 19psi

Might as well give it a shot. Dont forget to port a little bit more while you have it out.
Port the area behind the flapper door so it can open more if it needs to, also port the hole the flapper covers. If it doesn't work, do a search for pikens's easy cure for boost creep. Simply moving the pivot point of the wastegate arm on the flapper a bit higher, apparently might help with boost control. Since you have access to a shop you can probably make one really e-z. Good luck!
 
Check out vfaq for turbine and o2 housing porting prcedures and compare it to what your brother did and make sure it was done right. However vfaq missed one thing very crucial, porting the turbine inlet to expose the wastagte hole as you're looking straight down at it. I mean knock off as much material on top of the wastgate hole without obviously going to far. Easing the entrance to the wastegate path is half of the problem yet most porting seems to be focused on the exit, what good is a large exit when there's no one in the house. Before you do the flapper mod try clean up the porting, I am willing to bet it will most likely cure your boost creep.


Also keep in mind that boost creep is a sign of good performance so down grading the DP, adding a cat...etc, although will help, are often not the best approach because of lost performance. Porting or external setups are the best choice for dealing with boost creep IMO I prefere porting because it's free, improves spool up and keep the car at the stock appearance. Happy porting.
 
Hey yuzuha32 how did you solve your problem with the 30 psi or haven't you yet. I have the same problem and i was thinking of going with an O2 housing with dump tube on it. Wasn't sure if it'd totaly fix it.
 
what type of boost controller are you using. have you tried hooking it back up stock to see if it stops creeping. i know some people who have had boost controllers that have to much spring tension and cause it to act as if its turned all the way up even when its on the lowest setting. Just a thought

Is that boost controller working right? Even with boost creep you shouldn't be hitting 30 psi.
 
its a hallman so its not some pos boost controller that was just fabbed up in my garage i havnt fixed my problem yet i broke off a bolt taking the o2 housing off :( i dont know how i did that but its sticking out far enough to get out with some vise grips hopefully and im gonna double check the porting job my brother isn't what you would call mechanicly inclined any one know how to pull the old flapper out i called the local shop and told them what was happening and they told me that they blow 14b's up at 30 psi and i had to prove them wrong i bet they feel like shit when a 17 year old kid tells them whats up :) i also checked the turbine for shaft play and there was none and the fins looked good so turbo is still strong but im pretty sure the flapper is gonna do it
 
Flapper upgrade will definitely help but remember to port the entrance to the wastgate path or everything you do after that (34mm flapper, dump tube and sometimes even external wastgate) will only be half good. I would suggest sending it to a known dsm shop whom has done this before so they can port the path properly for the 34mm flapper.
 
Its all in the porting. I have ZERO boost creep and I ported my EvoIII 16G with a Dremel. I also ported the O2 housing, Gasket and turbine outlet of the turbo. I too polished my turbo. Rock steady boost Currently 17psi to RED line. Just Hit the gas and the needle rises and lands at 17 every time. Heres a thread to read....

I can honestly say that I am living proof that it can be handled by just porting. :D Just look at the pics....You Don't need to get the flapper mod. Also I modified the the turbo to have a boost tap right on the compressor housing. I used the original threaded hole. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

Good job :thumb:, that's exactly what needs to be done. Pay close attention to the pic of the turbine inlet, there's the key to solving your problem.

Thanks. Also I wanted to point out that while looking at the pics, you will notice that I ported the wastegate area. Not the flapper area. For some reason if you look at the gaskets I have posted in the pics, you will notice that the Evo III Turbine area around the wastegate is smaller than the T-25 or normal O2 housing wastegate area. What helped alot was enlarging it to match the Stock gasket. I did not use the Evo gasket because I noticed this. So I enlarged the turbine area of the turbo where the wastegate is and I enlarged the Gasket where the turbine is. It was alot of porting and it took a long time but this I think also helped as when the gases exit the Flapper (Since it really never opens fully) it will have more room to exit in the angle its meant to flow. It will not "Crash" into a wall but rather flow out due to more space. I hope I made it clear.
