Transmision problem??...

i was driving to and from work last night and when i would try to downshift form 5th to 4th gear it wouldnt go into 4th gear. So i tried going from 5th to 3rd...worked fine, tried 4th to 5th....worked fine. So i keep driving same problem from 5th to 4th. Turn the car off. Try to go from 5th to 4th with the car off. still doesnt work. Something else weird....when i put it in 5th gear, instead of being able, if needed, to take it out of gear w/o using the clutch, I HAVE to use the clutch to get it out (even when the car is off!). And then when i drove this morning(during nice weather) it worked about half the time, but not like normal. All the other gears work same as they have since ive owned the car. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would first check the basic's like your linkage's under the shiftknob and under the hood to see if they are catching on something in 5th keeping you from going to 4th.

Check the shifter and select cables, especially at the transmission end. The Haynes manual goes into adjusting shifter/select cables a little - enough to give you a general idea of how the process works. If you need help, let us know

Have a friend shift through the gears, and watch the shift cables at the transmission closely. You can take your MAS/Intake/Filter off so you can get a better look down there. Inspect the cables themselves, as well.
