Okay so im in the middle of swapping my transfer case almost have the old one off! but i ran into a snag now when i pried my transfer case away from the tranny the rod from the transmission started to come out not the way it was suppose to I do have pictures is this suppose to happen? It gets stuck where it is in the pic should I pry more? I just dont want to #### the tranny(sounds to painful)...

p.s. sorry for the bad grammer. I'm in a hurry to get this done.<a href="http://s285.photobucket.com/albums/ll77/RollDeBlunt/?action=view&current=tcaseproblem.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll77/RollDeBlunt/tcaseproblem.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

well theres not suposse to be any oil coming out when u take the trnsfer case off, as for the rod i know in the tranny theres a clips the holds the shaft inside maybe got broken. so just try to pry out the transfer case out and no let the shaft keep coming out with the transfer case

That shaft shouldn't come out of the transmission. It is held in place by a small metal ball inside. The transmission needs to be torn down and inspected for damage. The shaft splines may be damaged holding the transfer case onto it also. The tranny shouldn't leak either there is a seal in the case where the shaft goes in, most likely damaged or stretched from the shaft.

Rightio! Betcha you can relate to how happy I am to hear that! so now I need to pull the tranny and inspect it... hard to do??? and the place to get parts? can i just go to the dealership for parts and by dealership I mean any mitsu dealer? Oh did i mention I'm doing this in my alley in the somewhat of snow we have!!!! :):):)

Use some vice grips and grab the shaft as close to the transfer case without hitting the splines on the output shaft. Then you can put something in between the vice grips and transfer case to pry them apart. There is a small ball that holds the output shaft inside the tranny. When the shaft pulls out the oil seal does not seal on the correct area of the shaft and oil poures out. I know I backed out of the driveway twice with all my tranny oil in a puddle before I pulled the end off the tranny and put that ball in. Crappy tranny builder forgot to put it in :notgood: That's why you go to a pro for your tranny rebuilds cough...cough john Shep :hellyeah:

Hope that helps ;)

Dude that is so what it is! well i have a good feeling! because i was leaking really black fluid outta somewhere and my tcase was F*cked but when my transmission leaked it only started leaking when it was pulled out... and my tranny fluid is cleaner then the original leak(the really dark stinky oil) so it would have to be my tcase... I Tried the vicegrips but they only slip it's on there good..

The same thing happened to one of my friends when we were swaping his engine... we tryed using vice grips but it wouldnt work either, but since we were pulling everything out it made it easier to separate the T-case and the Tranny...

look at this thread, it will help you since you don't have to drop the transmission to the ground to doing that job!

The shaft that you are taling about ( output shaft, center shaft : there's many name given for this shaft ) is hold in the viscous coupler by a small steel ball. Not by the circlip. this clip is for retaining the viscous coupler on the other splines. But this little steel ball is not holding the output shaft very tight in it. It happened to me when i removed my old transfer case. the splines were so rusty and the output shaft was stuck in the TC so the shaft came out with the TC, just like yours.

Hey, the same thing happened to my car except the shaft seperated from both the tranny and t-case as I pried it off, if yours isnt I would suggest dropping the transmission as it really isnt all that much work. then, once that is off you can see whats going on better for one, and also get the ball that holds that shaft back in position.

If yours is like mine was (and it looks that way) the ball to hold it in will be in the end casing, where you will be able to reinstall it after the t-case is off.

Long story short, drop the tranny / t-case together first.

Seriously, is it hard to use proper grammar? I can't understand half of the questions being asked here. Come on. (Sorry I just read through like 30 to 35 threads and I'm really getting annoyed that people can't take the extra 10 seconds to add periods and comma's, rule #6).
