I've taken a look at the shocks on my 97 Eclipse RS and it looks like/rides like the back set are out. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I want something that will give me a smoother ride and tighter ride. My Eclipse rides pretty low to the ground as stock. Would there be any reason to put in a lower suspension or just put in a performance set. I really have no idea what the termanology should be when referring to the suspension. Any insight is welcome.

P.S. Don't have a ton of cash to drop on this project. Best for the price is always best :thumb:

Well your best bet for a smoother ride would be a full coilover kit that has the shock and spring together. But those can be pricey and unless you had $750(minimum) to drop on suspension then do it. (I did). But if you don't, your going to want to go with a SPRING (not coilver) and seprate shock setup. (if you buy coilvers without the shock your asking for trouble).

Eibach Prokit/ Tokicko Illuminas (white ones) are a good combo
But you can ask around. (stay away from the blue tokickos, they blow easy, I know from experience)

you have the choice of going with coilovers, which the main advantage is the adjustability... you can adjust your ride height and depending on the set many other ride options... but they are pricey... im running tein s-tech springs on tokiko illumina's, i love the setup... it only lowered my car 1.3" in the front and 1.4" in the back, but my whole deal was the car was low enough to start... the ride is somewhat stiff, but ive ridden in way worse... i love the setup though

This is a good budget setup. Yes GC/konis are better but you can get prokits and illuminas new on ebay for under $450-500 if you so desire.
Your car will be a bit lower then they advertise but just at that perfect level wheres its not slammed or rides bad. I would also get some bolts and make a "rear camber kit". Then get an alignment and your done.

If you plan on bigger aftermarket wheels, lowering the car is almost a must from a looks standpoint IMO.

Ask around and search, but the general consensus is that the Tokico Illuminas are the pretty much the best shocks for the money with our cars :thumb: Check on eBay for the Tokico Illumina Advanced Handling Suspension Kit. Comes with 4 Illumina shocks and 4 Tokico lowering springs...best suspension ever!!! :rocks:

I actually got it for a bit cheaper, but that's the same setup.

I have a 97 eclipse N/T also. The first thing I did with my car was fix the suspension. I was tired of being lifted like an SUV and riding rough because my shocks were blown.

I ordered eibach sportline for $237 shipped which was a 1.6 drop.

The shocks I baught were KYB GR2. I got mine from advance auto parts for $200 and change for the set of 4.

Installation on these two are pretty simple you just need a jack, jackstands, spring compressor and basic wrenches. No need to take it to a shop and pay another $200 or more in labor.

My car moves smoothly and grips the road 10x better than when I had stock springs/shocks (no bouncing around on the road either).

I hope this helps.

I have a Coil-Over Setup with a 0-4 inch adjustability....but as i learned the hard way, you need to buy stronger struts and in my case ( thanks to my friend who works at dodge) have to buy some OEM pieces because coil-overs are hard on your car .....and its a real bumpy ride ( especially if you live where i do ...pot hole city)...still i wouldn't give up the handling and steering response ....this thing handles on a dime :thumb: :D :dsm:

Wrong. A full coilover setup will ride a lot stiffer than a spring/shock setup.

I have the same set up on Daisy. You'll hate me for the price I paid, but I feel like sharing it. :D Picked up a used set of Sportlines for $40 from a buddy and my local 2GNT friends all chipped in and bought me a set of the GR2s for my birthday. Total investment for a quality drop on Daisy = $40. I love it. I had no idea how bad my stock ride was, as the shocks had just deteriorated over the past 8.5 years and I hadn't noticed. She rides like butter on the highway now. Sportlines are a bit on the low side, but the look is very nice until I am lucky enough to be calling up RRE to schedule an install appointment for some JIC Magic. :sneaky:
