The 2-3 shift has always slipped a little in my car so I always figured the clutches are worn out. The other day it suddenly got much worse and nearly wouldnt shift into 3rd at all.
While stopped at a light I noticed the Trans Temp light had come on. I was only a mile from home so I drove it home and parked it. Its got plenty of fluid but it smells aweful and is pretty thin. When the car is in gear the trans makes a weird sound. Kinda like its chewing up rubber bands. Sorta like the sound a power steering pump makes in many cars under load or about to fail.
So Im guessing its a pump in the transmission that has failed and caused the transmisssion to overheat. And if it was going bad for a while would that also contribute to the slipping? I drove it around the block a couple times yesterday to further diagnose it. The car still drives ok but the trans makes that sound and it kinda slips in nearly all shifts now.
Thoughts, suggestions?
