Thoughts on the Ex Cop Car

could've had an expired tag or the vehicle could have been stolen. Most of the time when a cops following you they are talking to their DISPATCH and have already made up their mind if your going to get stopped. PC (probably Cause) isnt hard to comeby and impeding traffic is against the law. Some state such as Texas really enforcethe passing lane law. It sucks got a ticket in my teen years LOL

Got the car, I'm probably going to address the peeling paint and check engine light (I forget the code, but I remember it wasn't big) and then put a for sale sign in it...

i can only imagine that the next highest bid below yours was like 750.00 for the car, and when they opened your bids they were screaming and yelling like they just cought a 200 pound tuna screaming " HOOK, LINE, AND SINKER" !!!!

Not really Joe. Usually there is a reserve on the vehicles. Without seeing the car, sounds like he still bought it at a good price. Only problem with a silent auction, you never know what the 2d highest bid was.

Got the car... And a bicycle... If I could put the engine on the bicycle... it'd go really fast... But save that for another thread...

I am curious about the price, I'll find out today when I pick it up. They quoted me about 2590... I bid about 2350 and less than 50 on the bike... So I plan to talk with them about this fuzzy math...

One nice thing about the cop car... Though it has the idling time, our engines are pretty tough, whereas our trannys seem to lose synchros, but I bet this thing was never really driven that hard, so hopefully the tranny has lots of life.

I do plan to just address the hood and roof paint, and then stick a sign in it. Cars are more expensive in this area. I sold my 96 GSX, with 128k on it for 4800 last spring. I might list this one for 4100 and see what I get. Either way, I don't mind driving it a while... :thumb:

Alright, the engine code was-

P1400 Manifold Differential Pressure Sensor Circuit Malfunction

So I've gotta fix that and I should be pretty golden... Well, maybe I should change out the 50wt oil that is in it too.. ;)

Congrats. Any pics?

I'll post some soon... But I don't think anyone will be very impressed... It's your typical red talon, black top, with peeling paint...

I did pressure wash it and got almost ALL of the clear coat off of the hood... The hood needs a repaint, but the roof I might salvage and just add clear...

I bet it got a new hood or something... The hood and sideskirts are faded a ton, but the fenders, doors, and rear all look great... Oh and a key scratch along the passenger side... Most of the side door back... Ug... I hit it with a little duplicolor... I've gotten them to come out pretty nice by doing a few coats of that and then sanding and then clearing a little and then buffing

Check to see if the MDP sensor is still on the intake manifold. If not, it may have been 6-bolt swapped. If it is still there, check to see that the plug is connected securely. There is a small metal clip (like a bent paper-clip) that keeps the pigtail plugged into the sensor. If that clip is missing, that plug comes undone really easily.

I agree on the "low oil pressure" issue. My car at idle shows very very little oil pressure on the stock gauge. If they thought that the gauge was anywhere near accurate and didn't use a proper oil pressure gauge tool to check it, then they may have thought thicker oil would fix it.

Why would you possibly use a pressure washer to wash your car?

Why not? All it did to my car was peel off the paint...:ohdamn:

But seriously, I have a pretty nice pressure washer and it comes with a wide variety of tips that change the psi... I use it because it gives a nice powerful spray and I can even get off some of the gunk and stuff that is on the car, but I don't put on a tip that would ruin the paint. It almost eliminates the need for scrubbing. Kinda like a touchless car wash at the gas station. They just use pressurized water jets that are set at an appropriate pressure as to clean, but not strip paint.

As for my hood I used my second strongest jet, and I took off most of the clear, like I was intending. I don't know if you saw that the clear was already peeling really bad, so I just wanted to see what would come off so I could determine my angle of attack. I found out that the whole hood obviously needs a paint job. It all came off way too easy...

Important note- I would agree that using a pressure washer could damage your paint, rather than clean, it could peel... So don't try it unless you are confident that you know the settings of the washer... :nono:

As for the MDP, is it the one that sits right on the top middle of the intake plennum? I'm pretty sure that is it. The clip was on, I just cleared the code and thought I'd sit on it a while... If it comes back I'll try cleaning...

Update- Looks like the oil pressure may be a little low. I took it for a short jaunt over a small mountain pass and the oil pressure was low enough in traffic on the other side that the light came on. Light came on again when I parked it at my house. But not while driving, even when I put it in neutral going down the pass...

Also... need a clutch :notgood: But that's not that big of a deal...

I need to look up the quickest way to get the clutch in and out... I don't want to mess around. Last time (the first on a DSM) I had real issues getting the tranny aligned back up... But I pulled the whole thing for a rebuild... Can It just be moved away and not dropped? I'll look into that.

Good news, MDP error has stayed off for 100 miles...
