420A The Handbrake Light Stays On

The other day I went to get in my car and noticed that the brake light was illuminated. I went to engage the handbrake and realized that I didn't have to press the brake to move it up and down. It was fully functional except that when put back down it did not lock into place (not engaged either so functional).

The light has not shut off. What do I do?

And is it possible that this issue can cause limp mode?

First thing is first - check the level of the brake fluid in the master cylinder. The light being on will not cause the vehicle to operate in limp mode.
