Well, as the title says, I went and did my first Test'n Tune at Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek, with the 95 GSX I just picked up. The car is VERY lightly modded, only power modifications are 3" exhaust w/ cat, ACT 2100 clutch and upper intercooler piping w/ Greddy BOV (routed, of course).

Well, was a BEAUTIFUL day at the track, around 85 degrees, and I was very interested to see what I could do with the car. I arrived at the track as the gates opened at 10:30 a.m. and immiedately went to get tech'd in. I have to say, the tech inspection isn't exactly...extensive, atleast for a street car like mine. I got through tech inspection in under 5 minutes (the majority of it spent filling out my info. card) and went to park and meet with my brother, who was running his 91 TT Stealth. I park and he meets me after he gets through tech and we decide to immediately get in a lane to get our first run in.

So, I'm sitting in the lane in front of my brother, looking at the cars around me. Besides the 8 & 9 second behemoths, there was only a small collection of street cars in attendance. Just to name a few, a group of EVO's, a couple Hondas, a Viper, a new GTO (sounded cammed and looked to be stripped out in the interior), a Ram SRT-10, and I believe that's it (that I saw). Needless to say I'm almost positive I'd be the slowest car there, never an uplifting thought. I shrug it off and continue to bake in the morning sun awaiting my turn at the tree. Ten minutes goes by and I'm finally there, paired up with a tubbed, slicked and nasty-sounding pick-up truck. I drive through the water box and pre-stage while he burns off a layer of rubber off those slicks. He comes up and pre-stages as well, at this point, I usually let them get fully staged and then wait til I feel comfortable to stage, however he won't do that and so I goahead and fully stage bfeore him. As soon as I finish, he moves up and get's ready.

The three yellows drop and it's go time, unfortunately for him, he not only red lights, but also some how bogs/stalls, so it's pretty much my run. I grab a reaction time of .302 and cut a 1.9 60 ft. (I blame the 2100, it just won't grab like I want it to) and finish with a 14.8 @ 90. Disappointed? Hell yes. I'm frustrated, but figure I have atleast a couple more chances, so I head back to the pits and pop the hood. My brother ends up running a full second slower than he did last season, but no 2nd gear will do that to you, it seems. I would like to mention though, even with his 14.3, he still destroyed the EVO MR that ran a 16 second ET.WTF

Now it's time to check on things with the car, however, having no fuel controller, heck not even a boost controller, there's little for me to do between runs with the car. I consider taking out my tool set, backsets and full-size spare, but decide it's just not worth it. The announcer calls over the loudspeaker that open sessions will close in less than a minute, so it's back into the lanes! I managed to get into the lanes before they closed them off, however my brother's not so lucky, seems he got trapped in where he was parked. He misses his chance. I once again am baking in the ever-increasing heat of the early afternoon sun, and try to paitently await my next go at the tree. This time, I get a free run by myself, as I was the last person in line for the last open session run. I get fully staged and take my time, bring the revs up to about 5500-6000, wait for it...and launch like I hate my car. I feel the car kind of get squirrly, seems the Kumho's that came on the car aren't all that great (shock), and manage to get my best time of the day, a 14.7 @ 91. I did get one other run in about half an hour later, but I didn't do as well as my previous two times (14.9 @ 91). So, I'll end my little recap here. Hope you all enjoyed it...I did. And if I can find hosting, I'll try and put up the vid of my best run as well. Let me know what you all think.

I did an intake-leak test before I went to the track, found several and took care of them. Car felt 10x better. Also compression and timing checked, both were spot on. So, if I should be trapping higher, I'm not sure why. Also, car blows no smoke, and no apparent shaft play in the turbo.

What where you shifting at and I don't think those traps were that low. I had intake, and a 3" full exhaust (O2 eliminator) was was only trapping 91-93MPH running constant 14.2-14.4's. Get a MBc and turn it up to 14PSI and you should be dropping the times and gainning a few MPH

I was shifting at 6500 on my fastest run. This is a 95 GSX, so I'm on the T-Too Small. If you were as well, then I seem to be about right. I do need a boost controller, I even had access to one if I had wanted it, I was just curious to see what it would do on stock boost. I won't be going back to the track for quite a while, but atleast I know where she stands as of right now. Well, thanks for the feedback boys, I really appreciate it.

Bill,

You're losing plenty through your 60". I don't know that I'd blame the 2100 for that. On my old 2.0 with a 16G, I cut a 1.68 60' on street tires and a 2100 and others have done even better. Either you're dumping it too fast and spinning or bogging it off the line. Launching is a fine art that you'll get used to more and more as time goes on. Also, it would help to know what kind of tire pressures you were running. I noticed that you said you drove through the water box. Was there no way to drive around it?

However, for being darn near stock, you did well. I would try lowering your shift points to around 6200 RPM since the turbo is giving up at that point.

Good job!

Andy

^^Ditto with the 2100#. Back in the day with my 16G I dumped mine at near 6K and broke both my center diff and rear axle.

A good launch, quick shift (or NLTS) and keeping the RPMs in the power band are critical for good times :dsm:

Well, it's quite possible. I just know I'm launching the same way as I did with my 2600 (on my old GSX, cutting consistant 1.7s). But I do think I could've launched harder, I was afraid I'd smoke that lil 2100, my first 60' was a 1.9, and I smelled clutch burning. Regardless, next time I'll lower my shift points and work on my launch. Looks like from what you guys are saying, I could bring my times down to 14.4-14.5's, that would be pretty sweet.

-Bill

Edit: Also, check the bottom of my original post here in a couple minutes, I should have the video clip of my run up.

Bill,

If you smelled clutch then you were slipping it a little too much. I would bring the clutch out a bit more quickly (not all that much) and squeeze onto the gas. The 2100 has a different slip threshold as you're finding out and with a little practice, you'll get back to those 1.7's. That and a few more psi of boost will put you in the ballpark to meet your immediate goals.

Nice writeup and keep us posted on other track sessions.

Andy

Thanks Andy! I see what you're saying about a different slip threshold with the 2100. I'll get that boost controller before I go back to the track and I'm sure it'll be a different story.

Also, my next write up will be in a couple weeks, I plan on attending an Auto-x on June 11th at FedEx field, I'm very excited.

If anyone can host my vid for me, I'd really appreciate it. I've been trying to upload it to photobucket, but it keeps timing out on me. PM or reply, thanks!

-Bill

Shift points will also help like mentioned above, here is what we do (note this doesn't mean we know everything or think it is best but maybe give it a shot and see what happens) we shift at about 7K in first since it comes real fast 1.7 60ft, then about 6.2-6.3K in second and 5.9-6K in third seem to net us the best runs. Granted we have 1G's so our 14B can hold the higher RPM's a little better but that seems to be the best with us.

####, thats the one weekend im gonna be gone. Make a good review of it will ya!

Will do. I've auto-x'd before, however, it was with my 57 trim'd 1g GSX. It was a lot of fun, but hard to drive a car in auto-x, that's set up for drag racing. I'll do a full-write up.
