I notice when I turn the key to ON in my 2g GST it reads just under 2k on the stock tach. When I start the car, it reads 3k+ when it sounds normal and my SAFC II reads a normal rpm. What would cause this?

Someone could have messed with the gauge and put the needle on wrong, possibly. Its not very accurate anyways, stick to your datalogging software or turbo timer.

^^Agreed. Do you have overlays by chance? If so, check to make sure that the needle gets full movement without touching the face anywhere. As for the re-calibration...
1. Take cluster cover off.
2. Take tach needle off. (Be very careful, the needles break easily)
3. Start your car
4. Use some sort of logger that shows correct idle.
5. Place needle on correct rpm marking.
5. Replace cluster cover.
