I have a 92 Talon AWD auto trans with 105k mi on it. In the last day or so I have noticed a squeaking noise coming from my rear end when I am driving slowly and let off the gas. It also squeaks as I turn the car off or when I hit a bump sometimes going slowly. The noise is never there when I am driving at speeds above 15 or 20 mph. Is there a problem with the differential/drive shaft? I have not noticed in performance problems, just the noise. What is the deal?

Mine started off as a similar problem, I was driving 1200 miles, and 500 miles into the trip I noticed a squeak as I pulled out of a gas station, 104 miles later I started noticing a humming sound... I dismissed it as road noise for about 3 miles, I decided to pull off and check my tires for inflation and what not, as I roll to a stop a horrible grating/grinding noise happened, any time I accelerated over 5 miles an hour the noise came back...

I stayed over night and had a gas station put it up on a lift for me, with all four wheels off the ground idling in 1st second and third gear you could hear the squeak but no grinding/grating sound. The squeak seemed to come either from the transfer case or maybe the u-joint right there. I towed the car the rest of the 600 miles and I tried this weekend to drain the fluid out of my transfer case to see if there was metal shavings (with grinding like that i would expect there to be if the transfer case is the culprit) but the bolt is locked in there!! My socket rounded the edges of the bolt and it didn't even nudge, so I tried vice grips, that just rounded it worse... So I'm hoping it's not the transfer case because i can't drain the fluid anyways :)

Let me know if you figure yours out.
