Squeaking at about 5-6k RPM?

When my car gets above about 5.5k RPM there is a really loud squeaking noise and I think its the timing belt. Does it need to be tightened?

Check the alternator and/or power steering belt to see if they need tightened. They like to squeal sometimes. I don't think the timing belt can squeal because of the cogged teeth it has.

^agree. Can also take a bar of soap with engine running and allow belts to get soap on pulley contact side and cause belt to "grip" pulleys if it's tight or belt has stretched over time.

Okay. I was wondering if it was the a/c compressor clutch squealing the belt.

Small exhaust leaks can also produce a squealing sound

+50 , when I would downshift from 4th to 3rd and got on it, the alternator belt would squeal a little. Tighten it up! Should be good to go.
