Hey everyone, just signed up to these forums and I'd like to see what kind of input I can get. I'm planning the purchase of a 2G Eclipse Turbo this spring and I just need some basic information. I'm not sure whether I want the GS-T or the GSX. Obviously, the GSX would be quite nicer, but they seem a lot more rare that the GS-T's and a lot more expensive, duh. :) I think I'm pretty set on the GS-T, so I guess I'd just like to know how reliable they are, etc. How much money you guys and gals have invested in repair work, not modifications, etc. Also, just out of curiosity - Those who have the regular GS or Non-Turbo, if you could go back in time and spend the extra money on the GS-T or GSX, would you buy the turbo instead? Thanks in advance for the time you're spending to help out a noob! OMG

Can't wait to have one in the driveway! :thumb:

just take car of it, itll last as long as an averange car. Crankwalk is a common problem that basically scraps ur whole motor but its very rare, so dont be afriad of it. These cars dont forgive, make sure it gets its oil changes and belts and such. if ur not really gonna modify ur car shouldnt give u too much problem. And if ur thinking about getting a GS or RS DONT, im sure they will agree with me that u should save and get the turbo version. Its so convient to have a car already turboed ;) :dsm: .

I'm pretty good at taking care of vehicles, so I should be alright, unless I get unlucky, I guess. :) I am planning slight modifications, but no 'racing' things. It'll be my fun, sporty almost-daily driver to just have fun it, maybe an occasional trip to the local drag strip here and there to have fun and get times. As for the NA models, I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick with the turbo decision. It'll definitely be worth the extra couple dollars. Thanks for the first response.

I've got a spyder gs with the 2.4 motor and I would MUCH rather have the GST model. My first spyder crankwalked.

The cars are very unforgiving, so just be buyer aware. Look at the other vehicles the person owns, so you get the kind of care he/she has taken to the car. If you get a car from a guy who has another vehicle on jack stands, rebuilding stuff, your in for a world of hurt.. generally (atleast in my own experience, and the other dsm owners i personally know) they do a domino effect, and everything seems to go wrong at any given time.

Well, I'm planning on purchasing from a Mitsubishi dealership so that might be a little harder. Is there anything that I definitely need to check for when I test drive any? (Obviously, I'll be listening for typical bad signs, such as pinging, knocks, etc.)

GS-T v GSX, is all preference. If your a long freeway driver, get the GS-T the gearing is much longer. If you like ripping through gears, and doing 3500rpms in 5th on the freeway, get the GSX.

I think I'd like to have the GSX better, I mainly do city driving - I guess it all just matters what I can come across in the area dealerships and what kind of pricing I'm looking at.

Thanks, these posts have been quite helpful! I hope they keep coming!

If your going to get it at a dealer, make sure their a credible dealer, and ALWAYS get the extended warranty. There's no telling who the previous owner was.

Yeah, I'm planning on checking the only 'official' Mitsubishi dealer in my area (Bianchi Mitsubishi in Erie, PA) and I'm assuming their pretty credible since they've been around a while. I'm defintely not going to purchase a vehicle from "Bob's Used Cars" or "Billy's Corner Car Store."

As for the extended warranty - Never said no when they've asked. :)

if you plan on racing your car at all, then i would go with a GSX. i dont know how many people that have started with a GST and complaind of traction issues because they were racing someone from 1-2 gear punch. especially if you plan to upgrade turbos. but if your just looking for a nice daily driver and dont really plan on keeping traction in higher rpms, then a GST is a fine solution.

also price will be slightly higher for GSX's but if you really are looking for all wheel drive but dont want to spend 10k on a stock eclipse look for a TSI AWD talon. a little cheaper and there the exact same car, except body mods.

maybe the 10k was a little exaturation but you get the point

Any kind of racing that I'd do would only be for an 'every-once-in-a-while' thrill when they have Grudge Night at Thompson Drag Raceway. ;)

 Yeah, I'd like to go the GSX route, but I have a feeling it's not going to be easy to find one in my area. I will be looking though. :D

Definitley get a turbo. I got a 98 GS for my birthday when I turned 16 becuase my parents thought that the turbo would be too fast. But now its been a year since I have had my license and they are gonna let me get a GSX. So, I'm saving my money for a GSX. The GS looks sweet for the price but has no engine to back it up. I lose to my friends automatic taurus and my other friends automatic sunfire for crying out loud. The thing is a dog. So definitley get the turbo. I can't wait til I get mine!!

 Yeah, turbo's definitely a good thing. Especially when you're losing to an auto transmission Taurus. :p

i can sell you my gst for a good price... as long as you don't mind a little crankwalk

Well, I'm planning a purchase from a dealer since my bank won't give me a loan to buy someone's car that doesn't have any kind of reputation to back it. And I'd like my first Eclipse purchase to be a purchase that feels like a good investment - Not one that I'm going to have to replace the engine in after 6 months.
